Well, I'm guessing that's why there aren't as many as there used to be. It lands squarely on the former. You need an FFL

I don't think the local hardware & plumbing supply store here in Maine sells firearms, but they do sell ammo. The larger hardware store and lumber yard does not.

The local hardware store in Red Lodge, Montana, did sell a pretty good range of outdoor gear, including fishing rods and firearms. I don't recall if they had any pistols.

My kid was telling me about a case he had in Las Vegas last night--17 year old girl shot by her father as he was cleaning his gun. Put a hole in her common iliac vein which is miserably hard to fix--8 units of blood. Took out a couple pieces of small bowel and left the abdomen open. Going back to the OR today to get the bowel put back together and close the abdomen.
I know people get shot all the time by guns someone thought weren't loaded and I'm no gun expert but don't you have to be some special kind of stupid to try and clean a loaded gun? If the girl lives she should find a different family.

My pet theory was “shot himself while cleaning gun” was a euphemistic way for families to save face/collect life insurance. Not sure that would still work with all the rocket csi surgeons now or when it comes to others but that’s my conspiracy theory (wrong thread)

Yes you do have to be a special kind of irresponsible to clean a loaded firearm. The first step prior to cleaning is make sure the weapon is unloaded - magazine removed or cylinder is empty. Second thing you do is verify the barrel is clear. And other people should not be around while you are performing steps one and two.

Dad needs a felony charge and to lose his rights to own a gun. But that won’t happen because 2A!

up here if you wana have guns you need to take an FAC course and it covers that kind of thing ^^ there was even a fake fence crossing where in a school classroom you gotta go thru the actions of unloading/ clearing a long gun before crossing a fake fence which might have been just stepping over a desk but you got the idea

Oregon voters enacted requirements for among other things, mandated safety course before purchase.

A judge in Bumfuck county stayed the law as unconstitutional. So it’s winding it’s way thru appeals

To back up a step--the other explanation besides stupidity is distraction. Dad's talking with daughter and forgets he skipped step one and step two. Easy to do in a lot of scenarios, IME. So, like TBS said, no one else in the room.
