No skiing for me this weekend. First week since the beginning of December that I haven't skied at least 3 days. Instead I spent the day yesterday on a mission to find some new boots for me and get some work done to my GF's. After calling every Lange dealer in NH, VT and MA the Boot Pro in Ludlow VT was the only shop that had the boot I was looking for (Lange RX). We had a great experience, they fitted me with boots and footbeds and got my GF's boot issues worked out. Those guys know their shit, definitely give them a shot if you need boot work.
Blue jacket with red pants and some Moment Bibby's ... definitely a group of 4 of you on the lift. My friend was also doing a pizza in a tucked position behind me. It was a rowdy day for sure with some good people doing that G.N.A.R. !!
Oh and I'll be up next weekend, definitely down to meet up.

Continued excellent conditions at Hickory on Sunday. Snow pack is very deep and dry so, even though it set up a little from Saturday, it still yielded very nicely underfoot. Incredible conditions on Hare and Grand Teton with lots of barely touched snow at the trail margins. The big rock abutments on Grand Teton were completely covered and stable. Even the jog to the tight on Topnotch that doesn't get skied much because of the boulders and rock slabs was skiing great. Beatnik was about as good as I've ever seen it and the last steep drop above the top of the T-bar on Jackrabbit was very deep with nothing showing through. Winfall had excellent cover top to bottom even on the rocky drops just below the first headwall. Call was amazed at both the terrain and conditions. I think we have another convert!
No pix but a TR from one of the tele-fest attendees can be found here:

great EC G.N.A.R. reference, keep up the good work
Instead of paying for a lift ticket to ski a tracked out resort, I decided to head into the wilderness where I was hoping 50 inches of untracked snow awaited.
Sunday morning I got up a played a hour of hockey (with no time on the bench from 7-8:00). Then me and one of the guys I play hockey with decided to go check out a spot I had been eyeing for several years.
Side Note: Unfortunately, as I feared, the glue on my climbing skins is unsalvageable and has turned into a goop that sticks and comes off on EVERYTHING. I spent 1.5 hours trying to get the crap off the bottom of my touring skis. So my next skiing related purchase is going to be a new set of fat skis that I'm going to mount my touring bindings on along with some new skins.
In light of the problem with the crapped up skins, I had to resort to snowshoeing.
The first 2/3 of snowshoe in was easy. This was the type of terrain snowshoes were built for.
Then we got to the bottom of the steep part. Here is the view looking up the chute we plan to ski:
Snowshoeing up the steeps was brutal; lots of boulders and very deep settled powder that made taking the next step nearly impossible in places. This is NOT the terrain snowshows were designed for. A few places took 5-10 minutes to progress upward 10 feet of vert. 1.5 hours and a few impromptu repairs of snowshoe bindings later and we were at the top.
The chute was really nice. I would say about as steep as the main gully in the Gulf of Slides but only covering about 300-350 feet of vert. It was filled in with dense settled powder and no crust. The settled nature of the powder prevented face shots but had an awesome bottomless feel to it.
Looking down from the halfway point:

I definitely need to get some new BC equipment. I started out with a half broken snowshoe binding that I had made workable with some twine. I broke the other side of the binding halfway up and luckily brought some extra twine to piece it back together long enough to hold the shoe on my boot till I got to the top.

Hey Greg,
My buddy Chris has descended it at least twice (possibly more, I just know of two descents for sure). I know one of the times he skied it, he had a ski pop off mid way down and had to descend the rest on one ski until the bottom. Pretty wild. Gotta wait for just the right snowpack, as it doesn't stay out for too long.
On another note, for stoke, here is a pic of Jimmy's Line. I'm pretty sure my friend skied lookers right of that above the last section of rock.

In search of some powder.
Great weekend filled with powder and pillows.
Unfortunately it's already 47° in Norwich... please make it stop!
Pics at some point later when I've got time.

well Jay delivered once again
lines were filled in so nice. dropped more hits this time then any other trip combined. from andres to a 'new to us line' by a tram tower where you hike up and in...sick line, to the hit in deliverance and the Dip...oh the Dip. we lapped the shit out of the Dip with multiple cars the first two days. amazing how you can get fresh tracks in there for three straight days! it really helps when they have that side of the hill closed
we even hit the faces with fresh blown in powdah. mid week is so key!
i did not have my cam with me, but we did have a gopro and a contour in the group. hopefully i get some footy from them.
i took one cell pic the whole time...and got lucky on the timing with the delay...my bud chuck jibin a lower glade.
^^^ love that chute From_the_NEK. That rock column at the top is a nice effect.
Intended on heading to some of the Peaks N of Jay for the afternoon, but we were forced to drop in early because we spent too much time looking for the Long Trail. In the end, although we were on the trail for several hundred yards, we did not see a single blaze or track. The skin up and out was as entertaining as the skiing. We also found some very confused looking post hole tracks in the valley when we were skinning out, I forgot to take a picture of them.
Franconia skied nicely. Best day I've had in the BC this year. Great buttery snow. Stability wasn't an issue (W facing slope).

That was funny but I meant with Strawjack at Jay. Was not referring to that photo. The exposure on that face is intense.
How'd you modify the image and I will show you where I have skied Whitehorse? Sorry some of us old guys aren't very computer savy. But we do like our beer!![]()
The Passion is in the Risk
This time was the worst conditions and was not clean but that was part of the challenge. Each other time the snow conditions were much more skier friendly and with the right conditions snow does stick to all that granite (exposed slab excluded - I personally have never seen all of that section covered and would never venture that way anyway) and can be skied clean. Variety is the spice of life.
You going to be at Cannon next weekend Strawjack?
