yep, it's pretty sad and clear that unless you want something done as a healthcare provider you have to make sure you birddog every fucking thing and everyone to make sure something is done. It gets exhausting having to birddog every fucking patient scan even for the physicians reading the scans (they don't give a shit either). Makes it hard to provide good care to those in need.

That wasn't my experience in healthcare, either as a doctor or as a patient. The great majority of doctors, nurses, techs, etc were conscientious, well-meaning people. There were exceptions of course, and I wasn't fond of our anesthesiologists but the nurse anesthetists who did most of the work made up for it. I learned a lot as a patient--that to the nurses my comfort and well-being were more important than the doctors' orders--not that they ignored them but that I was their priority. Like everything else there are terrible hospitals, great hospitals, and everything in between.

One thing that has changed in nursing since I was a medical student in 1972 is that the god-like nurses who knew everything about their patients, knew what was going to happen with them before the docs did, knew when to call and when not to call, are gone What happened? The super-smart women who were those nurses started going to med school. And at the same time nurses started getting blamed a lot more and became a lot more defensive.

My wife was told in high school that if she wanted a family she couldn't be a doctor, that she should go to nursing school.

    Yep.
Exploded diagrams and part numbers for almost anything.

You can often replace multiple parts for less than the cost of a service call if your guessing what’s wrong.

PS. Does anything work on the stove? Could help diagnose what’s wrong. 10 years ain’t that old for a stove.

I know a decent group of new nurses that went through "training" during covid. I wouldn't want them anywhere near any part of my body, even after a night at the bar. It's a sad state of affairs in that dept. for any sex, but the new nurses are just bored broke instagramers basically. I could go on at length about the caliber of recruiting the profession has achieved. It's pathetic, but an order of magnitude beyond. No offense Scummit. I'm sure you see it.

I’ll never forget Brooke, the ~50yo LDR nurse who delivered my daughter (OB was in the room for maybe 10 min). She was by my wife’s side for her entire 12 hour shift, essentially ran the entire show, consulted with the anesthesiologist, corrected the OB, didn’t bullshit us when things got complicated… That woman was amazing. Obviously a function of the 10,000 +\- labors she’s managed…

Compare that to the 25yo postpartum nurse who half assed my wife’s care later that day…

I work with new nursing grads all the time. There are some that are great and some just getting by and then some that you wonder how they got this far.

It’s mostly a factor of maturity and motivation. I find that new nurses that are older and have had other careers seem to be more focused on the patient and less on themselves. That said I do work with a good number of very good younger new nurses. It could be a function of the environment in the OR, incompetence isn’t tolerated as much as on the floors.

Have a bunch of kids we had in school that all recently graduated that went into nursing or PA….some will most likely be very good that went to good schools/nursing programs.

But then there are some and we’re like huh?……some schools/programs will let anybody in…lol.

It’s really weird to think of the kids that went to PA schools….5 quick years at some random school and they are done…and out working in hospitals/offices, etc.

Nursing seems a lot like teaching. Modest barriers to entry, respectable wage, decent benefits, stable employment that can be found in almost any location. Which means you get everything from people who are interested and dedicated to the work, to people who just didn't really know what else to do with their lives and don't really care.

The current state of PAs is a bit annoying. PA was originally a program for people that had experience in some other allied health professions. It was a way to get experienced people into a mid level practice. It wasn’t supposed to be a short cut to get there.

Also interesting that of all the times me and my family have needed real medical help, the PAs I've worked with have been BY FAAAAR the most knowledgeable, the most caring, and have provided the best care overall. Every one I've worked with have been total rock stars. Contrasted with way too many other practitioners who seem to have no clue or straight don't GAF. At least I'm not having to deal with Bozeman Health any longer. Seriously. Eff that place. Some of you all know the old saying. If you're in the area and have an emergency, just keep driving until you get to Billings. Tho if you're "lucky," you'll get flown to Boise or SLC instead for ACTUAL care.

The teaching shortages are so bad here/ around the country…..we are taking anyone that is breathing….and our state “teacher” colleges in PA have open enrollment….it doesn’t matter what you did/what ur grades were in HS…..

One of the many reasons what/why “Education in America” is in its current situation.

Same with our first kid--great nurse, never did get the name of the OB resident who caught the baby. I don't think she spoke a word to either one of us. At least she didn't drop the kid on his head (but my wife made up for it by waxing the wood floors just as he was learning to walk.)

At least in CA getting into nursing school is hard so presumably they take the best applicants. The problem is lack of instructors--a nursing prof makes half of what a ward nurse makes--and lack of clinical rotations--no one wants a bunch of student nurses in the way.. We had a fantastic surgical tech--ex Army drill instructor who had been accepted to med school but the Army wouldn't pay for it--who kept trying to get into nursing school and was never accepted. Maybe it was my name on the recommendations that kept her out.

Both teachers and nurses have the curse of it being “women’s work” so they are chronically underpaid and devalued compared to the “men folk” doctors who get paid well and respected.

Right, it’s not the education and time component that makes doctors better paid.

I’m not saying they should get paid the same, I’m saying the nurses are underpaid based on the value they provide and shit they put up with, which causes both shortages and brain drain in the profession.

    Shit that annoys you

Flying with my wife, 4 and 2 year old. On Southwest and we tried to change our flight but couldn’t which then bumped my wife from A17 to C54 in the seating order. I get on with the kids and we sit two and two so both get a window, neither gets stuck with 2 kids and we are in front of / back of each other. I save my wife’s middle seat with a bag. Some dude 3 people in front of my wife tried to sit next to my 4 year old and take my wife’s seat and would not take no for an answer. There was an identical middle seat that didn’t have a 4 year old next to it a few rows up.

I don’t know if I’ve ever been so ready to fight as when he tried to push his way into the seat and my 4 year old started crying that that was his Mamas seat. I went from being totally calm to feeling all my adrenaline dump. Never been in a situation where it felt like someone was threatening my small child like that.

There are benefits and drawbacks to flying on Southwest. Two free bags to 50 lbs- free. Cheap flights, and good schedules from some airports. The seating thing is sometimes not one of the good things. Sometimes the best laid seating plans are trashed because somebody wants "the seat". I was always understanding about families that are trying to make it work or even couples that want to sit together. It's the Southwest crapshoot when flying as a group or family.

This is only a minor annoyance, but I thought it was funny. My old Ring doorbell conked out, so I replaced it a couple days ago. Amazingly the doorbell circuit was the first breaker I tried (there are about ten breakers labeled just "lights"). The next step is to setup the doorbell. Want to guess which circuit my wifi router was on?

Trying to buy goggles online annoys me. Of high importance is the density and tint of the lens. Most listings don't list that information, or make it unclear what they are specifying.

The "specs" will inform me that the lenses are spectra-cular orange or whatever. One, I can see exactly what color the lenses appear to be, from the photograph of the goggles. And two, I don't care what the goggles look like from the perspective of other people; what I look like is other people's problem. I am the one buying the goggles, and what I care about is what I see while wearing the goggles.
