WTF? Isn't that kind of the whole point of the singles line? It's great for everyone. Apparently that manager missed that part of his Applied Chairlift Mechanics 101 class. If only you had a quality /facepalm gif handy for him.

The mountain I worked at had a fixed triple. Doubles would see that most chairs were goin up with only two, so they'd split up and jump right on via the singles line. Some customers would grumble about it as a form of line cutting. "Ma'am, I can't help it if those kids are smarter than you."

Srs - I've done this with groups as big as 4 if the single's line is short and rolling.

When they do occasionally make a singles line it’s stupid. They don’t enforce shit, so it just ends up being singles riding up alone more than half the time unless they have some social skills.

Anyways. No singles line today, which I was informed of. It just never occurred to me that riding up with another single further up in line would create a problem or wouldn’t even be encouraged, especially when there’s no rope or anything to contain the line. How do they expect people to form up?

I dunno. These guys had no fewer that 3 lifties at the bottom and two up top the entire time I was there. One to scan your pass every time. One to bump chairs. The third to chat and throw snow every so often.

I’m not miffed by the chaos. I expect it. I’m miffed that I was called out for trying to jump on with other singles. Felt really bizarre.

The hill was generally chaos. Lines weren’t actually terrible but there was zero queuing or markers. Just a long line from the bottom of the one open fixie triple that wrapped across the bottom of the beginner area. Also, they were doing nothing to encourage singles to pair up with doubles or even other singles to shorten the line. So I did what I usually do in that situation (pretty common here) and zipped up the line to find other singles to ride with or maybe a competent looking couple. I enjoy meeting people this way.

I got a talking to by the lifty manager. He told me there was no singles line today and I needed to wait at the end of the line like everybody else. I told him I was actually shortening the line and nobody is complaining. Nope. Wait at the end of the line please.

Wtf. I’m not as down on this place as IAS, but they sure do try my patience sometimes.
Common sense on midwest lifts is pretty nonexistent. Just guessing it's because people have never been anywhere where lift lines are actually managed? Place where we were today had a fixed triple, our crew had four so I asked the couple in front of us if they would mind if I hopped on with them, just gave me a blank stare and then looked the other way. At least they had a kid there directing traffic or it would have been a complete shit show.

Whenever things are busy enough that filling chairs is an appropriate response, I usually go with counting feet and join undersized groups.

My local resort has been doing an excellent job filling chairs on the new six pack, almost annoyingly so, because they have lines for groups of 2-3 and 4-6 as well as singles lines. The 2-3 line tends to keep the singles line from moving as quickly as it would, which I find annoying.

I met my wife on the sublette chair at Jackson by getting her and her girlfriend to split up and be the 4th on our chair.
I feel like at Jackson on Sublette and Thunder the regulars would harass you if you didn’t fill the chairs correctly. I mean I do.

Skiing at the local hill a couple days ago, where lack of snow means extra crowds at the one lift that has open terrain. About an hour before the lift closes, one of the liftys starts pulling the ropes for the line. Gets rid of the singles line as well as one of the 4 person lanes. So now the already long line is stacking back up the run, forcing people to try to stop in a spot that's already down to gravel because of the thin cover. And a bunch of chairs are now half full because the singles line is gone. I'm generally willing to cut liftys a fair amount of slack, but some of them are pretty terrible at their job.

I've never done that but I've loaded a 4 thinking it was a 6. Best part was, one of the group of 4 trying to load the chair didn't make it on. Nobody famous though.

Silverado chair at Palisades on a powder day gets huge lines and there's no place to form an orderly maze or otherwise control the crowd so it turns into a melee. If you are on the triple as a group of one or two you can expect to be pelted by a lot of snowballs--and Sierra cement can make some wicked ones. Mustonen might want to try this.

I dunno, call it what you want but powersliding/drifting/buttering/sideslipping/falling leaf have been a legitimate technique in terrain management since the beginning of time. There are bullshit off camber firmbird parts of the mountain that I've been buttering for decades.
