You're right! I guess I never really appreciated the design enough before, but now that you mention it, I've never had any issue with my wheel lug bolts (or the hubs they bolt in to) on any of my Volvos. And if I had to replace them, they're only like $5/each. But seems its not an uncommon occurrence for people to have broken studs and lug nuts of all things (looking at you, Ford) on more standard vehicle fare. And people act like Euro cars are so much more expensive and PITA than domestics. HA!
Studs aren’t hard to replace or particularly expensive either, fwiw. No idea how much fuckery and expense is involved if you jack the threads in your hub, but I do prefer the bolts.
focus.
Sheared a lug off on my WRX by crossthreading, what a moran. Subi's have weak lugnuts for sure. New lug was <$10 and it was a 30 min job. For said moran.
There's nothing better than sliding down snow, flying through the air
Took the new sled on its first long road trip over Thanksgiving, 723mi each way.
First observation (as compared to the old full time 40/60 awd Allroad) was holy shit the gas mileage. I was getting just about 600mi to the tank and I was cooking too - cruise at 85 and my preset 90mph alarm went off a bunch. I blew past the first Costco I’d normally fill up at and saw I still had a half tank plus. I’m sure all the gadgetry helps (decoupling Quattro, lowering the car all the way, etc).
Second was, this thing has just gobs of power in reserve when you need it. Mountain passing, getting around long lines of holiday travelers camping on the left lane, Ohio drivers… all of it. Easy peasy.
The seats are still fantastic. My old allroad’s were second place to my XC70s and these have taken position 1 or 1a. The heat/vented option is so nice on a long drive.
I still call it The Jake.
Ha. Was just gonna post my own first TR. Around 600 miles in 48 hours ending yesterday. Still playing with all of the settings. "Comfort" makes the car so easy to go long without it being too floaty. Barely feel the road. Agreed on the seats. My setup was built in nav for the virtual cockpit (cause it's so damn cool) and carplay for the upper screen. At night, I liked the upper screen off. Yes to gas mileage! Yes to blink and overtake. The thing is built for sex.
Spent a few years in the seventies as a tire jockey and only recall breaking three studs with the impact gun. All on the same car. An old car. Perhaps my ham handedness saved him a crash on the road? VW bug bolts could be a pita and saw many a nut rounded off on chryslers with their stoopid reverse threads and their ignorant drivers. Scary times though with construction vehicles, truck tires and tractor wheels. Glad I got into computers after that so that I could electrocute myself several times.

I’m driving the wagon a lot lately because..dogs. I’m going to fix the rear shocks. $1400. It’s only booked as a 3 hour job. I just hope that solves the rough ride..
Also needs but putting off:
Oil level sensor. $500. Just wait till it needs an oil change and then it’s basically free labor.
I bought a Mercedes oil measuring stick just to be safe. The w211 has no dipstick available so you have to use the measuring stick and use the cap.
Audi owners, on the B9 and it looks like same same on the guys that bought the new A6 Allroad... there's that black plastic casing between the windows. The passenger side was into a mean north wind last weekend and the whole side of the car froze solid. I accidentally scratched that trim with the ice scraper. Anyone done the same? Any tricks to buff it out? TIA.
Yes, exactly. Area in the red circle.
I scratched it pretty good with the ice scraper. I guess I’ll have to ask a detailer if there’s rubbing compound or something that will buff it out. Looks pretty ragged right now.
If you can feel the scratch’s with your finger nail buffing will be difficult and a rotary polisher will work best. Start with a 400 grit polish and move up from there. Even if you can’t get the scratches completely out polishing will smooth the edges of the scratch so less visible.
Hand polish will just make it worse.
If you can't quite get it right and feel like giving up, you could always just replace that trim piece. $172 at the dealer. Door Applique, Part Number: 4K0837901 but verify your Y/M/M.

Found a "genuine Audi" one on eBay for only like $60!: https://www.ebay.com/itm/203532652247
OEM parts has it for like $120: https://audi.oempartsonline.com/oem-...0837901?c=az0x
I don't know how easy/difficult it is to replace in actuality, though. Personally, I'd explore a trim swap, though instead of fooling around with buffing and what not.
FWIW I had this stuff disintegrate & peel on my A3’s passenger pillar. It was more like a kynar coating than a clear coat, guessing maybe 20-30 mils thick? Not sure if the design has changed with that link to the applique.
It definitely seemed like tough stuff though, in my case pretty sure it lost adhesion to the base metal… but see no reason why you couldn’t buff out a light scratch.

I'd wait to replace it until after you scratch it the 2nd or 3rd time.
Or get some black gloss wrap and wrap all the pillars- it's a nice flat surface that a novice could wrap.
