California has many miles of magnificent coastline that will get a surfer of any experience level excited. Surfing may not have been invented in California, but it sure is ingrained in the culture there. A lot has changed since surfing was first invented, yet some of the most timeless spots to surf along the coast remain there for the spoils.

The sprawling coastline gives surfers of this state plenty of reasons to explore its beauty. Go have a day at the beach at some of these spots that make California one of the best places to surf.

Black's Beach

This beach in La Jolla isn't exactly easy to get to, but if you do, the surf will reward you. Hidden beneath the bluffs of Torrey Pines, this secluded spot is one of the best spots to hit the surf in Southern California. The trail down can be dangerous, so make sure you are being mindful and have good footing.

Black's Beach produces big waves consistently. One will find scores of surfers there year-round. This spot isn't a time to surf for the first time as it can be treacherous. Respect the waves and enjoy the ride!

Surfing In Santa Cruz

The water is cold, but it's not like you are stepping foot in Lake Superior in the middle of a Minnesota winter when visiting Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz. Put on your wetsuit, grab your board and go. Much like any prime surfing spot, it can get quite busy at this place during peaks of popularity. The crowds shrink on the water when the big waves come out. This makes the cliffs overlooking the beach a great place to watch for those who wish to stay dry.

Santa Barbara

Rincon is located in Santa Barbara along Highway 101. One will find three different points to surf while enjoying Rincon: Cove, Indicators and Rivermouth. Santa Barabra is a place rich in surfing history. To be able to ride a wave in the same place that legends of the sport have a special feeling for surfers who come here. A long day of riding will make the legs feel weak, but the heart will be content.

Mavericks Beach

Located in Half Moon Bay, this surfing spot can produce mammoth waves. Again, much like other beaches on this list, Mavericks Beach may not be the best place for a beginner surfer. Mavericks is known around the world by surfers who flock to it, especially when the break on the right is producing waves that mirror giants. Surf on!
