For decades, the high glacial slopes of Whistler Blackcomb’s Horstman Glacier have been a proving ground for the world’s best freeskiers and snowboarders. Summer camps here were legendary—an essential stop for athletes chasing year-round training on real snow. But that era has come to a sudden and unfortunate end. Momentum Camps, Whistler Blackcomb’s iconic summer ski and ride camp, recently announced the cancellation of all future summer camps on the glacier indefinitely.
Whistler Blackcomb explained that ongoing glacier melt and shrinking snowpack have made it unsafe to continue operating summer camps on the Horstman Glacier. Despite the long history and cultural significance of these camps at the resort, the changing summer conditions simply no longer allow for safe lift access and the snow coverage required to run them.
While summer camps on the glacier are cancelled, Momentum Camps shifted their operations to early May for the 2025 season and plan to continue offering camps during that timeframe. The organization is actively exploring alternative options and locations at Whistler to potentially revive summer ski and snowboard training in the future, though no concrete plans have been announced yet. Momentum remains committed to finding a long-term solution and will keep their community updated as discussions progress.
The closure of summer ski camps at Whistler Blackcomb marks a significant shift for the global skiing community. The Horstman Glacier has been a cornerstone for summer training, helping shape countless world-class athletes. With glacier retreat accelerating, the industry faces the challenge of adapting to these new realities.
