According to Jackson Hole News and Guide a Dodge sedan with no one in it rolled off a pullout into the Snake River on Independence Day. A kayaker inspected the vehicle after it careened into the water and confirmed there were no passengers inside. One of the kayakers tore the license plate off the car which allowed the authorities to track down the owner.
The deputies discovered that a 52-year-old Jackson woman owned the vehicle. She was swimming in the snake and drinking when she got into a fight with her boyfriend and stormed off. The woman told Lt. Slade Ross of the Teton County Sheriff’s Office that she parked her car because it was acting up, and she left her keys in it. It is still not confirmed how exactly the car made its way into the river.

The woman registered a 0.13% blood alcohol content after taking a breathalyzer test. The woman escaped DUI charges, due to the lack of proof that she was in control of the vehicle, and she wasn’t charged with failure to report due to the fact that she did not have any way to contact law enforcement.
The car ended up in the river around 5:30pm on July 4th. The car floated downstream for about a half mile in the swift waters, into an area of the river where the water runs very deep. Teton County Search and Rescue attempted to locate the vehicle on Monday after the incident, but were unable to find it. The Dodge sedan remains somewhere at the bottom of the Snake and it will not be a simple operation to remove it from the river, as it flows at nearly 6000 cubic ft per second.
