Colorado’s Avalanche Danger has Reached Historic Levels

Coloradans don’t let this new snow cloud your judgment. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center just released a chilling report: four backcountry zones have gone to EXTREME. This is the first time avalanche conditions have become this severe since the ten forecast format was instituted.

CAIC doesn’t need to tell you twice, just look at the news reports. Historic avalanches have been running throughout the region since this morning and it’s looking to continue throughout the day.

What does this mean? Just don’t go. Avoid all backcountry, even roads, trailheads and infrastructure that could be in an avalanche path. Don’t even let low elevation terrain fool you either, rare slides are possible on unsuspecting terrain. Keep things simple and stay inbounds.
