She feels the OPs pain.
Has the OP considered Chicago?Callie Kuchan is returning to Illinois after finding a small ski town in Colorado too expensive.
Kuchan lived in Breckenridge for four years and wanted to stay, but couldn't afford to buy a home.
She also said the mountain has gotten too crowded since Covid, and it's too hard to make friends.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.
"Happiest years of my life were earning < $8.00 and hour, collecting unemployment every spring and fall, no car, no debt and no responsibilities. 1984-1990 Park City UT"
Fred does not. That MSN comments section is such a fustercluck.
Cascade and Devils Head are just a short drive north though.

Agreed 100%. Should have been started 20 years earlier at least.
I will say that in contrast to phatty I currently live just over a mile from a station with an even closer one opening next year. That will be followed by one that's going to be a five minute walk from my house (NE 130th).
Her story is remarkably similar to many others just like her that I've seen play out many times over. "oh look how affordable everything is thanks to covid, and no one has to work in an office anymore, lets move to [insert expensive city/resort/beach/mountain] and live our best lives!"
**2 years later**
"What do you mean they raised the prices of everything back to where they were pre-covid and how dare they ask us to actually come into work again?!?! I'm shocked and someone should do something about this!"
Clicks are clicks to the aforementioned generation.
I still call it The Jake.
It wouldn't be the first time Summit County has claimed a midwesterner.

I don't
sounds like she has a loving husband so I never saw her on the tinder rounds or face down while sitting at the bar after to many jameo shots
she's so uptight prolly not my kind of girl I like em loose and crazy
my heart strings have been tugged hard by her article if she only knew me I woulda rented her a room in my house well below market rate or we could exchange housework for housing I'm flexible
this place churns and burns the freshman class hard they always looking for an excuse why they could never graduate
I feel like this could be made into a very different kind of movie.
I still call it The Jake.
probably
I remember once this girl came into the bar applying for a job she pretty much broke down crying after a few minutes talking to the manager
it was pretty messy cause breckenridge wasn't what she expected and she was living out of her car and couldn't find a place to live
the manager was pretty stand up guy gave her some food and a drink on the house and we all told her it'd be alirght just plan on living in your car for the next year and then you'll finally find a place to live
Breck, what a cruel bitch it can be.
I still call it The Jake.
I blew through breck back in January 1989, before I even became a Colorado native. My buddy was living in a house in Blue River with maybe 6 or 7 other people; one dude was living in the laundry room. This shit ain't new.

Overall, I would say there are pluses and minuses, with the big plus being the variety of outdoor recreation in the area. The big minus is that you have to drive a fair bit for most of the goods - that's no different from Portland, but Portland does a little better on urban amenities. My wife is really unenthusiastic about the town though, so it's probably not our forever home.
More detail on the upsides:
-People are noticeably more friendly than Portland
-I've never had any crowds on my Schweitzer days (but the 2-hour drive each way got pretty old)
-There's a great beer scene and an okay restaurant scene - there's a small number of outstanding places and a reasonable number of places that are fine
-Awesome gravel riding into the Palouse out my door
Downsides:
-We didn't pick a great neighborhood, if we were doing it again, we would have bought in a more chi chi area
-The winter weather is pretty intense compared to Portland (one week last November had a high temp of -10 F). My wife really struggled with this, and even I started to question our choices when I found myself thinking we might need a space heater in the basement to keep it above freezing.
-Alaska slashed their flights, and with our parents in Portland and Bend, that's been a bummer. Also makes work travel a PITA / more expensive
Today I learned that Bellingham is far from skiing and the hills re small
