She was way more enthusiastic about Bellingham than Spokane, but we just couldn't make it happen. Having said that, it's wetter and cloudier than Spokane, and I'm not sure how that would have gone over the long term. If it weren't for the state income tax and questions about whether there's really enough water, we probably would have jumped at Bend.

Yeah, never lived in OR, but friends and relatives who do think the income tax is excessive, which certainly would've curtailed our buying power.

What I was getting at with Mrs pdx is the almost complete lack of sun in B'ham from mid-Oct to June.

I really like OR and it’s been a while since the Mrs lived in PDX so I had to check the state income tax after reading the above. Holy shit, it’s almost double what it is here at nearly 10% and there’s local income tax on top of that.

    But no sales tax, so...

"everybody's got their hooks into you, fuck em....forge on motherfuckers, drag all those bitches across the goal line with you." - (not so) ill-advised strategy

If you’re a capital gains earner great, if you’re an ordinary income earner, not so much.

I bet Upstate still crushes it in overall tax burden.

Yeah, if you’re earning at a rural upstate rate and taxed like you’re downstate that would really suck ass.

I understand that’s always been a point of tension between the regions, wherever they may be.

If you want to go down the wormhole....https://smartasset.com/

So yeah, I'm no policy expert and on only bitch a bit. But the sniff text makes it seem like we pay enough tax to get a bit better value.

But yes, Steamboat has grown/changed like none other that I've seen in the land of weed and sun. Living here in the Fraser River Valley, I heard so much "Winter Park will never.....". I think one you take a drive around Steamboat you realize there is no never.

The size of the average home being build there has to be over $5k sq. ft. I friend that lives there was just the low bid on a frame job at $48/sq. ft. That's just labor.

So yeah, JV, I can see why you'd want to bounce given the remote job. I'm addicted to the blue skies and open spaces so I'm fucked.

NY has got to be close to the top when it comes to tax burden. WA and OR total taxation are almost the same, but hit at completely different social strata. In WA, if you're poor, you're fucked. One of the most regressive tax structures in the country. OR takes aim at upper-middle class. That's why the north side of the Columbia is littered with McMansions.

Reside in Vancouver, make purchases in Portland.

Is that a thing? I guess that extra drive would have to really be worth it for the the cost of a few extra gallons of gas.

I drove down there from Seattle to buy a stroller and crib and some other baby crap but doing the math probably broke even on gas and time.

It's absolutely a thing, but you still pay Oregon income tax if you live in Vancouver and work in Portland, so you need your job to be in WA too. Having said that, the Costco by the Portland airport (just south of the river) is supposed to be the highest revenue Costco location in the US, and I imagine the Best Buy and Ikea out there also do pretty well.

I'm a classic tax and spend liberal and happily voted to pay more taxes for years in Portland, but at a certain point, I started to feel like I wasn't getting anything for my money. Portland has among the highest tax rates for high earners - comparable to Baltimore (???) and NYC, but can't seem to get anything done with that firehose of money and various departments are constantly asking for more. I can't see that services are worse in any meaningful way in Spokane, and we pay much less in taxes even with sales tax.

Yeah, I'll bet that location sells a lot of 75 inch OLED TVs.

What's your opinion on armpit hair?
The possibilities really open up if that's your thing.
