4 year apprenticeship in VT (and being smart) and you could be a Master Electrician.
Plenty of work available when you hang your shingle out.
    this is the way.

especially the not getting fat part.

A friend was a teaching pro. He's a natural lefty and became a teaching pro as a righty, for obvious reasons. He quit years ago because that's a tough gig living in NE. He plays lefty now and will swing righty too just for the hell of it. Nobody likes him [emoji16]

Friend of mine was a sheet metal worker in a shipyard. He switched to making metal sculptures and makes a lot more money. But not as much as he made buying a house in the Berkeley CA flats for 5 figures, back when you could do that.

If you decide to start a business, just remember that when you work for yourself you have the world's biggest asshole for a boss.

the big difference is the trades man has to get under that building or do whatever needs doing

while the guy driving a desk doesnt have to go to the gym he can even skip it if he wants

I see tradesman who still go to the gym

Oh, I imagine I’d probably end up working in the cart barn, in exchange for free golf.

Friend of mine is a retired cop. He became an electrician in his 40's. He managed to work it out so he only does new construction, not much crawling around, contorting, etc

I used to have a tennant who was a fireman, he told me a lot of them also have a trade becuz they got 4 days off so they can either make some $$$$ or get in trouble with the large bar tab/ marital dificulties

Buddy said he could fix me up with any trade with his contacts at the hall, so he got me a drywall guy, the tennant had been an electritian before firefighting, he was a power lifter with no neck, they have to stay in great shape

Yea, I know it’s dumb, but it’s is an option for some.

I was just thinking of the jobs I had in my youth and if I had to go back to manual work I would be an arborist or window washer again.

Golf course pros, especially the assistants, are always miserable. Consistent lack of joy from those guys.

They believed that shit about "do something you love for a career and you'll never work a day in your life ". The way that generally works is you just end up hating something you used to love.

Find a way to make a shift that still leverages your previous credentials.. Masters in human behavior or education could be combined with personal recovery experience... Take a gig at a treatment center or become a licensed chemical dependency counselor and work with the probation department???

As someone who did HVAC in new construction for one week I can say that crawl spaces can get fucked. The electricians all seemed less pissed off than the other tradespeople.

You've been a bartender in training all these years, you just didn't know it.

So they just want to punch someone rather than outright kill them? Every job site I am around is real happy when the project starts and even happier when its done and the last 1/4 is painful.

Buddy of mine was a life timer bartender, 4-5 nights a week at what was his pick for the best place in town to work. Other than the uncertainty of growing older doing that kind of job he seemed very happy.

I think JPH has posted in the sobriety thread; bartender may not be a good choice of new careers.

There's lots of sober bartenders, maybe most of them that do it for a career. I've known several. It keeps them sober seeing what happens when people drink. But whatever, it was more of a joke than serious advice.

Anyways I hear there's a big demand for snow-removal techs out Tahoe way.

Get your PSIA Level 3 cert, some boots that don’t flex, ditch the pole straps, start a Youtube channel, and begin raking in the dough to fund your real career of day-trading.

Find the most elite golf course nearby. Tell the superintendent you want to become the best greens keeper known to man. Not sure how long it will take, but the job would eventually get to where you are just sitting in riding lawn mowers all day, maybe standing up to mow greens and otherwise driving the maintenance carts.

Smoke weed all day and chill outdoors. Probably doesn't pay well, may get boring, but in the summer you can hit on the cart girls and be the creepy 40 y/o.

Bonus perk with this is that you get to tell everyone at parties that you're a ski instructor and level 3 certified. Maybe even have a business card with your Youtube channel and your @aol.com email address on it.

Write or edit content for an educational publishing company or online. Law enforcement is also always hiring. Or be a municipal bus driver.
