Wtf is up with this Chinese air crash?

Does this ever happen? Just straight down from cruising altitude? Suicide by pilot?

    https://www.cnn.com/videos/world/202...ripley-vpx.cnn

I saw it represented as a graph somewhere, taken from tracking data, I guess, and it's bizarre. Just, straight down.

I saw that video last night
First thought was only a pilot could keep an aircraft pointed straight down like that
At those speeds it would be difficult to keep it online like that

Saw something on the interwebz that the vertical stabilizer detached. I mean, it was on FB so who knows? I've read several accounts from US instructors that say that the Asian airlines are so focused on fuel savings that they basically turn on the auto-pilot from take off to landing. They don't train them to fly the planes, only to engage the auto-pilot.

What's the g-forces when you drop 20,000 feet in one minute? I hope/presume they all passed out wayyyyyyyy before impact. Otherwise it would be a painfully terrifying way to die.

Isn't that the case in all flying now? Except the take off and landing part?

Well, ok, that's what I was thinking. I don't fly, but, wouldn't it take human control for that to happen? I mean, a plane, left on its own, dropping from altitude, would try to glide, right? At least a little?

g forces only exist as a function of speed and directional changes. There's no significant g felt in a steady state dive (not saying this was necessarily that - most of the facts are not out yet)

Plus, the 20000ft number isn't really correct. Just flying level at what would be a normal cruising speed for that aircraft would be between 40000 and about 48000 feet per minute.

asia is a big place, and the standards very greatly across it, the PRC having a generally good record especially compared to someplace like Indonesia

This smells like a pilot suicide to me.

The autopilot doesn't "try" anything, because it isn't smart. It just does what it's told.

I won't speculate on the who, but that's a plausible how.

This is likely the only mag here who would really know, so if he’s not saying…that should kinda say it all.

Recall your HS physics… they were super awake and super terrified. Horrible.

I was replying to mtt, but it was really just a snarky way of saying it's way too early for any of us to know.
