It's kind of like smoking in that we all know that anecdotal guy who's 90+ and been smoking like a chimney his whole life and is still alive and kicking, but that's just one idiot who beat the odds.
Jerry Garcia didn't die from Heroin, but it had to play a role in his death. He was a mess from that shit for decades. His drummers (Bill K) new book 'deal' discusses it a bit.

Anthony Kiedis from RHCP was f'd up for a long time and finally came clean. Survived somehow. Their first guitarist Hillel Slovak did not survive.

The speedball mix has taken many out.

He was pure genius, a true American Master.

It bookends well with the Lou Reed. They both understood heroin.

As did Bird (who weaned off heroin by drinking two fifth of whiskey each day), Miles, Art Pepper, Chet Baker, Art Blakey, Ray Charles, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Bud Powell, Charlie Haden (Jack Black's father-in-law), Philly Joe Jones and, of course, Billy Holiday. Gotta wonder what modern jazz would have sounded like without heroin, although the other founders of bop (Diz, Monk) avoided it.

I wager that the list of musicians who didn't do heroin is shorter than those who did!

    88 POUNDS!
Good to have that off the street. The addicts in Rutland are going to have a rough go of it for a while.

Way more shit going on here in Burlington than in Rutland (says the guy who grew up in Rutland, couldn't wait to get out, and rarely goes back). Watched a five bag heroin deal go down in front of the house last weekend. 2 days later needle and tie off band in the middle of the road. Been dealing with this for the last year or so from the one apartment unit down the block. Bunch of fat, white, wellie women dealing to scummy white trash. Thought it was just pills but looks like they've moved on. Of course there are a bunch of kids and grandkids living with them.

Cops are trying, they've stepped up patrols and we call in license plates when we see someone waiting for the man. Neighbors are all pretty pissed and united in getting this stopped.

Good for you guys. Don't give up, seriously. Lived around it once, and it totally sucks. Crack was worse, but white people never got their arms around that one.

I have a serious question about the "War on Drugs," but I'll put it in PolyAss instead:

Just wondering but with the cops' well-known habit of inflating shit does 88 pounds actually translate to anything like a million doses? That's ~.04gm/dose. Not that it matters, just curious.

    Anyway heroin is NASTY!
WW2 had many firsts in warfare, and one was the use of pharma stimulants by the soldiers. The Germans surprised everyone with the speed and intensity of the Blitzkrieg, and we have learned that millions of speed pills were distributed to the front lines (along with a fair amount of alcohol). The drug was called Pervitin. The allies were also speeding, especially the British, who popped government issued pills in the millions. Don't know if the Americans made a big effort to distribute speed to the soldiers, but, it was there. Elvis Presley was a famous casuality, post war. By the time he made it to Germany to serve in a tank unit in 58, the military was handing the stuff out like candy, and he was hooked big time. Never a big drinker or druggie before that. Came home and found a few doctors to get him up and then down every day, and the rest is sad history.
Shit was legal when I was in high school. First thing I ever did, before weed, acid, even drink. 25 cent a pill. And it was good. Then they invented time release dex. Life just zipped by. I easily attribute a lot of good grades in college to that stuff. Cramming was fun.

I don't know if this is ironic or not, but when I was in HS those white cross-topped uppers were called "bennies."

The pot and psychedelics were crap back then too, in retrospect. We still grabbed all we could.

I mean, Seconal vs ambien, codeine vs. oxycodone...nothing from back then ranks. Except maybe black afghan hash - that was something.

I remember getting some morphine one day, sometime in the late 90's or early 00's... Everyone was psyched when it came around. Had to take handfuls of the shit in order to replicate the opioid highs we were accustomed to.

    Afghani?
