Haejangguk is another great soup, but I still like Pho the best... especially Pho Bo (Hanoi style.)

Heh - it literally means "hangover soup." I've only had one style - not sure which kind of Guk it was.

If it's free association - tom khlong and lao noodle soup <- the latter's a broad title, but something like pho with chicken broth, maybe. who knows, maybe it's endangered unicorn.

Oh Mai for sure on the east side. Only bummer there is no tendons, but the meats and broth are quality. I always get a pint of kimchi to go, so good and so cheap.

On the west side, Asia Palace.

Extra tendon and tripe so good.

Dude Oh Mai has kick ass sandwiches but their Pho is dog food compared to Pho Tay Ho on the 17th South block of Main. Been to a few other Pho joints around the city but Pho Tay Ho is still the best. Mi La Cai on State has some good noodle soups and the Pho is decent too.

I generally like the rare roast beef. Brisket is good, tendon is OK, not a real fan of the tripe but I'll eat it.

Pho Tay Ho, check it out, you won't be disappointed.

I LOVE the noodles at Mi La Cai, I remember the Pho as being pretty good, (7/8 out of 10?) but not mind blowing. The smokiness they get out of the mixed Vietnamese (cellophane) noodles is pretty good.

DC Pho in.....Washington DC is the best I have had. I always walk in with a raging hangover in order to truly appreciate this fine soup.

Pho fan here. Every weekend if I'm home. Lucky to have the best pho I've ever had two blocks from my pad.

I have to respectfully disagree here. We drove down and checked out Pho Tay Ho saturday night and wished we had gone to Oh Mai. It was good, but the broth seemed a little one dimensional and not as richly beefy as Oh Mai's.

Hmm, crazy. Most of my friends agree Pho Tay Ho > Oh Mai but to each their own...

I just don't get it. Pho is beef broth soup...nothing special. I had my first bowl two weeks ago and thought, "Meh...it's ok, but nothing special." I had the rare beef special (w/ beef balls, tripe, and brisket).

I'll order it again, but I'm not driving 5 minutes off the highway on my way home to get a bowl.

    Why so much love?

If it tasted like run of the mill beef broth, they're doing it wrong.

It can be more than beef broth. It should be really cheap - in the US like $5-8 for a large bowl. (like 10-20 cents in Vietnam)

most of the places I've been in the US have a wide range; when grandma's throwing crap in the pot it's different than junior.

no...it was different. But not WOW. Maybe it was because I was expecting a life changing moment...since the place I went was so highly recommended by a worldly food critic and native Vietnamese.

(I did finish it...and wish I had more noodles)

Yes...the price was nice. I went back to the same place on Saturday and had the Special Pan Fried Noodles....That shit was goooood

Well you do realize you're comparing soup to a noodle dish, right? Did you put the greens in and (very important) squeeze the lime wedge?

Not comparing, just stating that the restaurant isn't incapable of making a great dish.

Yes on the greens (Thai basil?) and a dandelion-like leaf. Yes on the lime. Yes on the thinly sliced jalapeno, yes on the sprouts, and more sprouts, and even more. Yes on some hoisin sauce (on the side - I liked that) and yes on the sriracha too (again..on side).

I tried it all to make it better than average.
