    TR: Colorado Longboard Day 4.28.07

    Date: 4.28.07

Location: Loveland Ski Valley/Basin, Colorado - USA

Weather: HOT, Damn HOT, Africa HOT!

    Soundtrack:
    Hammer Time

From the Land of Sky Blue Waters,
From the land of pines, lofty balsams,
    Comes the beer refreshing,
    Hamm's the beer refreshing.
Brewed where nature works her wonders,
Aged for many moons, gently mellowed,
    Hamm's the beer refreshing,
    Hamm's the beer refreshing.
    From across the rippling water,
Through the whisp'ring pines and birches,
    Comes the beer refreshing,
    Hamm's the beer refreshing.
Comes a call to cool enchantment,
Comes a call to cool refreshment,
    Hamm's the beer refreshing,
    Hamm's the beer refreshing.
Hints of lakes and sunset breezes,
Dance and sparkle in each glassful,
    Hamm's the beer refreshing,
    Hamm's the beer refreshing.
First, apologies for the TR delay but I am a world class procrastinator.

Sigh…Seems like it's gonna take a little while to really get CO's Longboard Day off the ground proper with only FrankZappa and I able to rally the long rails all day. And a whole lot of people unable to rally at all.

Special shoutouts though go to Berko for the tix and for his truly valiant attempt with the Rossi VAS DH 214s he took his beating like a man before throwing in the towel, MakersTeleMark for finally getting shamed into rolling the E99s (210cms) + leathers and Telepariah for putting in time on the 200 Kazamas + leathers. Also, HUGE props to telemike and his wild ass wife Crystal for the Hart Cameros + Look Nevadas

Saturday's "phrase of the day": Turn you WHORES
Saturday's "technique of the day": AGGRESSIVE! Weighting and Un-weighting

This TR, brought to you by:
Hamm's From the Land of Sky Blue Waters
    And
    Carlo Rossi Blush
Getting our spancers together, can't have a hot spring day without Hamm's, a Hamm's cooler and in partial tribute to DoctorWhat? I procured a bota bag for the Carlo Rossi (btw- expect to see more CR+Bota action from me, that is some brilliant stuff).

one great thing about having a long bed pickup? Easily carries long boards:

Pretty suck view of Evans Saturday morn:

Obligatory stop to piss & see the N. face of Torreys

4.28.07 Temporary Home of World Longboard Day Headquarters

even first thing it was already too warm for the sweater. Rossi Strato 102s (210cm) on the left, Rossi VAS DHs (214cm) on the right. The Stratos are downright fun and easy to ski……when compared to the VAS DHs

    My new Cameros:

The Man, The Myth, True Master of The Long Rail - Frank Zappa (who scored excellent parking immediately next to THWLBDHQ):

    Think Safety First:
FZ - "Hey, somebody is beeping?"

    LB - "Me"

    Team Longboard Day:

    Zappa's Quiver:
Grey ones: Dynastar GS Coupe du Monde 210 w/ Marker MRR circa '86 in the AM
Silver ones: Dyna Super G 213 (first generation) w/ old Marker M4R and Rotomat heels circa '78.

Some San Marco boots circa who knows!

    Lemon's Whips:
Rossi Strato 102 - 210s (circa '68 or '69?) w/ linkens stacked to the moon.

    Obligatory lift shots:

With Berko during his LBD attempt:

They definitely have FrankZappa's number at the loveland ticket office:

Onto the action? (BTW- I'm going to include a lot of AKPM shots here so just be forewarned)

    Berko making it look possible:

Zappa knows how to ski guud

A little berko sequence, note the last picture is when my buffer filled up and I missed some greatness

    aftermath:

    ooppsss again

Blurry pictoral proofs that my heels are not actually locked down:

    Longboarding is thirsty work!

I'm pretty sure that at least two or three random people were turned into full on Carlo Rossi Blush fans during lift rides with Team LBD…or at least nobody vomitted after drinking it

    Berko calls out Rontele:

Swiped from Dobish, MakersTeleMark rocks the E99s so SICK!

Swiped from TeleHoar, Telepariah sets out on his Kazama 200s + leathers, there is NO WAY I would ever attempt something like this, none.

After TP swapped to his shorter skis he, and then Zappa proceded to make a quivering mess of my already battered and bruised ego in Abowl:

Frank Zappa suffers from severe overexposure (a problem he didn't have when alive and actually recording music) as he airs into Abowl:

We spotted Hacksaw at one point, on girl skis though
of course…even he skis faster than I do:

One of the lady avy forecasters was not shy about giving my prominently displayed manhood a squeeze:

Lemons don't jump and they certainly don't jump on longboards:

Don't worry, I fell after the buffer was full too.

Zappa knows how to drop clean airs with no falling, seriously, the guy friggin rips even on longboards and with like 20 or more years on me, he and TelePariah are like you know hero gods or something:

Blahbitty blah blah blah, more Zappa just cranking happy turns, I'm sure by this point in the day he'd moved to his SuperG sticks as well:

Ahhhhh finally some groomers, sweet relief from the gloptacular off-piste, you can see Mc_P in the background attempting to rock the steeze but sadly for him, between zappa and I we had 496* more cms of skis than he did. *well close to that anyway.

STD made a quick appearance at the raffle but flailed at LBD

Woolbury (the man that makes the cornharvest happen) and TP:

Telemike & the Ownerizer, no babies were allowed beer at this event but Mike was allowed to suck on a binkie:

And a parting shot of yet another pattented Zappa railyard turn:

Huge thanks as always to the CAIC for their efforts all winter and to Woolbury for putting on an excellent event.

I'm calling all you bitches out for next year: Start plying the interwebs, garage sales and 2nd hand shops for qualifying longboards cause that was sad! I've got a free Hamm's + Bota shots of Carlo Rossi already lined up for any participants next year. Plus, I'm announcing now - the Hamm's 12Pack Challenge ™ for the Longboarder that can last the day on the VAS 214s + Linkens.

Till next year, this is the lemon boy swearing off the longboards and signing off from the THWLBDHQ.

Heh... I believe I've ridden the lifts at LLand with this guy more than once.

Nice job, LB. I promise to do my best to get there next year. Looking for the 200cm snowboard.

Well played Lemonboy! Best soundtrack evah!!!

LB is a legend himself in case you haven't noticed. The man rocked those Strato 102's locked in with loose heels for the duration and called for appropriate Hamm's breaks (every third run max), hauled out the Carlo Bota on every lift ride annnnnd did the bota straps without tying himself to the chair for a bullwheel ride.

I didn't think to buy stock in Hamm's and Carlo Rosi last week but I'm sure the stock is soaring now after LB's promotions. Every person that walked past world Long Board headquarters immediately noticed the Hamm's cooler and commented on it at which time LB offered up a cool refreshing Hamm's.

When Berko was cartwheel beatering in the cement on those VAS Long Boards all I could think of was the old cable binders and all the compound fractures everyone had back in the day. Brave man bein locked into those monsters. KUDOS to you dude.

and, again, HUDGE KUDOS to Makers for takin' my old Europa 99's and Extremes up on the pass for a spin. I seem to remember that exact steeze that he so valiantly reproduced (which I'm sure now was the very thing that turned me to the Dark Side <AT> )

    -------------------------------
Echo on the somewhat poor representation... But, just you wait... there's always next year.

    2. Call around to ski shops, lots of them sell used
    3. Swing by a thrift store
    4. Garage Sales - you should've looked over the weekend but there's one final Friday sale day coming up.
    5. Maggot borrow: mine the local and extended collective for pairs. It's Tuesday and if you move quickly you can probably get a pair shipped for ~30-40 on loan from a W. Coast LBD Hub (ship back via the slow boat for <20). Or sack up to telemark, there'll be a wide array of tele-enabled LBs at LBD, the bindings are much easier to adjust.

Please feel free to add any add'l tips, especially our W.Coast brethren that've had longer to work at it.

If storage is a problem for you: I will take them at the end (you get dibs for following years but otherwise they'll be loaners).

The weather looks to cooperate... which is good, cuz I don't fit into a lot of these old clothes the way I used to.

I'm calling foul on releasing spy pics of the costume before LBD.

Whatever happened to the element of surprise?
That was just one of the many original costumes I am fully prepared to represent in.

In the words stated by Berko on Saturday when I pulled out the Bell helmet still in the box "Don't you ever throw anything away?"

and my reply: "I've got a 5,000 square foot barn plus numerous out buildings... Why would I throw anything away?"

I forgot to mention about this part. This gal played (?) along perfectly and I'm still laughing my ass off about it. Her husband / boyfriend/ SO whatever who was seated on the other side of her from lemonboy played it very cool too. Lucky for you LB, it would've been a long way to the ground.

Lift ride: "Oh, so you work there?" "Cool" "Blah, blah blah" "Yeah, I was at Silverton avy school that year when they pulled out the 105mm" more "Blah, blah , blah"

Her (caught glimpsing): "errrr..... aaaaaaahh..... I couldn't help noticing.... but.... did you.... errrrr....... well, have you got something in you pants?"

LB: "Do you want to feel it?"

    followed by the grope

    <Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha all around>

Me: "gimme your camera, we gotta get this."

    Mucho gusto!

And don't worry, rontele. I won't be riding the cow for quite a while. I like a boot that offers at least a little support. Can't believe how strenuous that was! Nor can I believe we used to ski on that crap all day every day. Musta been young and dumb and full of something that is not brains.

I boiled my thermometer, and sure enough, this spot, which purported to be two thousand feet higher than the locality of the hotel, turned out to be nine thousand feet LOWER. Thus the fact was clearly demonstrated that, ABOVE A CERTAIN POINT, THE HIGHER A POINT SEEMS TO BE, THE LOWER IT ACTUALLY IS. Our ascent itself was a great achievement, but this contribution to science was an inconceivably greater matter.

Next year I'll be holding all you promiser's feet to the fire again

Again, big thanks to zappa et al. I too still get a good laugh about the package grab, when I showed my wife the pictures she burst out laughing and said "oh jesus"

Not only does he ski those all year, I got the slight impression that his "costume" wasn't entirely ironically inspired (of course…my windshirt only made it out of unironic rotation last year….).

Had to retake my e-test (fuckers and their silly catalytic converter requirements).

TP- I'm gonna keep an eye out for some Granite Gear cuffs for you so you can have all the ankle support you desire

at least I have a whole year now to procure some good vintage gear that falls within the parameters of the official Longboard Day rules.

Those things are the true hellbents:

Many thanks to FZ for letting me touch my inner harbl.

Big props to LB, FZ, Berko, and TP for rocking the long boards. Don't forget, Dobish rocked them all day from morning until our last run at 6:30, you can see his Volkls reaching out to the sky.

Buster- the Stratos live all year locked in my gun cabint so there's no way you could get at them. Surprisingly fun to ski even after all these years.

BTW- thanks to Xboat for the new hammy-avy!

Makers- The stratos have almost that much camber, not quite but close. That's "sidecut" in oldtech.

    Dave... Repeat after me:

...just keep repeating that mantra, and then when the time comes you'll graduate to the phrase of the day: "Turn you WHORES!!!"

On the first groomer when lemonboy layed 'em over, the extra camber caused him to turn the opposite direction.
