Lunada Bay Surf Gang’s Clubhouse Demolished

This appears to be the end of a long saga in Lunada Bay, where a group of middle-aged men, calling themselves the "Bay Boys", have terrorized the local surf break thanks to clubhouse they built into the side of the cliff. The town Palos Verde and the California Coastal Commission has ordered the destruction of the structure after a lawsuit was filed against the Bay Boys.  

“That the city is moving forward with plans to take down the fort is indeed a good first step,” Noaki Schwartz, a spokeswoman for the California Coastal Commission told the Daily Breeze. “We will continue to work to make sure measures are put in place to ensure the public is not discouraged from enjoying Lunada Bay.”

Demolition started Tuesday morning, with the expectation of being completed by the weekend. Wednesday morning the Palos Verdes Estates police were called to investigate an incident that they are now calling "severe" vandalism. On Tuesday night a contractor's car was keyed at the site and the ignition of a tractor trailer truck was tampered with. In addition, equipment at the base of the cliff including an air compressor trailer, tools, a generator were all damaged in a fire. 

The city released the following statement:

“The City condemns and will not tolerate such conduct. The Police Department is actively investigating this criminal act. The City remains committed to the safety of the public and the safe use of public space, and it will maintain its efforts to ensure that the coastline can be safely enjoyed by visitors and residents alike. Removal of the structure will continue without interruption, as it is clearly a step in the right direction.”

No word yet on who is responsible for the incident.
