66 People Ride One Giant Surfboard In Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach, also known as Surf City, USA is one of the world’s surf meccas. The first surf club was formed there in 1955 and the US Open of Surfing began there in 1959, so why not attempt set the world record for most people riding a wave in this world famous surf spot? On international surfing day in 2015, 66 riders set out to accomplish the most people riding a wave, on the world’s biggest surfboard.

Mass amounts of logistical effort went into putting the board together. The foam for the board was cut by an experienced team of manufacturers in Rhode Island. The piece was then shipped across the US to Huntington Beach, CA. This video showcases the collaboration and efforts that went into designing and manufacturing the board. The production process required engineers, shapers, designers, manufacturers and surfers to assure that the board was capable of handling the task at hand.

The final product was 42 feet in length, 11 feet in width and had a thickness of 16 inches. In order to break the Guinness World Record, there had to be more than 47 people standing on the surfboard for more than 10 seconds while riding a wave. The attempt took place on International Surfing Day in Huntington Beach. Thousands of people gathered to see the event take place. Sixty six surfers waxed the giant board and hopped on. Lakey Peterson and Brett Simpson were two surfers that took part in the attempt. The surfers managed to ride the wave for 12 seconds and broke the record for largest surfboard and most people riding a wave. The board is now on permanent display at the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum.

This attempt looked like a pretty rad event to be a part of and will definitely go into surf history.
