There’s a new player in the bike industry, and it’s a rather familiar but unexpected name: Walmart. Technically, their new hardtail is being sold online through the brand known as Viathon, but it's still owned by Walmart. The retailer's move into the high-end bike market shouldn't come as a huge surprise considering last year's expansion into selling outdoor goods.

Walmart's heirs, the Walton brothers, are also huge cycling fanatics. Just look at how they've transformed their hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas into a bustling mountain bike destination.

As for the bike itself, it's a proper machine. The Viathon M.1 comes in S/M/L and is best suited for trail and XC riding. They didn’t skimp out on the components either. The most expensive model has a 120mm RockShox fork, SRAM XX1 gold Eagle drivetrain, SRAM Level brakes, and Stan’s No Tube Carbon Pro 29 Wheels. Dang, that’s definitely not some $300 Huffy. The new bikes range from $2,400 to $6,000, and it will be interesting to see its impact on the market and on local bike shops.
