US Resorts to Reopen in May

After what was undoubtedly a lackluster start to the winter season, Mother Nature seems to be making up for lost time by sending the US some last-minute pow.

Historically, a handful of resorts keep their doors open well past may, but this year, due to some unlikely freshies hitting the Rockies and elsewhere last weekend, several resorts have decided to reopen for business during the first week or two of May. So, if you’re itching for one last send up to the mountains before the season comes to a close, you may be in luck!

Among the areas in the US that are planning to reopen this week is Lee CanySon, closed resort to Las Vegas, which plans to re-open this coming weekend from Friday on thanks to a 6” (15cm) snowfall last weekend.

There’s also the Arizona Snowbowl, it posted 19 Inches (47cm) of snowfall in 24 hours at the weekend, the most of any US ski on April 27, 2024. It plans to reopen from 10 am – 4 pm on April May 4th & 5th.

Over in the East coast it’s Jay Peak in Vermont and Sugarloaf in Maine expected to join usual May survivor Killington to offer snow sports this weekend.

Elsewhere centres still open in May include Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper, Loveland and Winter Park in Colorado; Brian Head, Snowbird and Solitude in Utah (Brighton plans to reopen later in May); Mt. Hood Meadows, Mt. Bachelor and Timberline in Oregon; The Palisades and Mammoth in California and Crystal Mountain in Washington State.
