Avalanche Kills Solo Snowboarder On Pyramid Peak in Jackson Hole

According to the Jackson Hole News & Guide, an avalanche off of Pyramid Peak in the Tetons south of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has killed 30 year-old snowboarder and Jackson resident Jed Wesley Foster today, who was riding alone. A person who witnessed the slide called it in shortly after lunch, and Teton County Search & Rescue then diverted a helicopter, which flew over the area and saw tracks leading into a slide path, and later on, a snowboard sticking out from the debris. Unsure of how old the tracks were, Search & Rescue officials arrived on the scene and, in the course of combing through the debris field of the avalanche, found the victim.

According to the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center, avalanche conditions have been rated as Considerable, with a particular concern for setting off sensitive wind slabs in an upside-down snowpack that formed over the weekend as heavy snows arrived along with high winds and warming temps. The avalanche occurred on an east-facing slope between 36º and 40º in pitch and slid as a surface slab 36" deep.

This is all the detail currently available about the incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and their family. We will update this story as more details become available.
