Have you checked vwvortex? I just bought an R and they’ve been helpful.

The biggest complaints I’ve read from owners on the electric VWs is poor UI/UX and complete lack of physical buttons to control audio/comfort etc.

BTW, I have that exact control panel and I actually like it. I do not mind not having buttons at all. I got used to it in about a day.

(Posting quick in this brief moment of forum functionality)

I just pulled the box off my mach e. The bump in mileage appears significant. Too early to give actual numbers, but seems like it's somewhere in the neighborhood of a 20% improvement with it removed.

The cross bars (with a bike rack) are still on, and I still have winter tires on, so I'm still not up to "full" mileage.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. We took ownership of the car last week and have been loving it so far except I'm not a huge fan of the infotainment system. That's what Apple Carplay is for though. Switching between the ID.4 and my manual tundra feels like I'm shifting between digital and analog driving modes. Now to put on a 2" receiver and pick up crossbars for the box...

Ive been waiting for a simple &quot;actual&quot; truck that can pull 7,000 pounds for 100 miles r/t. not interested in an infotainment system, it is going haul a boat, fish, and firewood - and generally look like a work truck within a year. pavement princess need not apply</p>

I agree with this. I would just like it to be made by a legacy car maker.

What's your logic wanting to buy a legacy car maker? Most of them have decades of incompetence, unavailable parts and unreliability experience. Unless it's Toyota or a couple other car makers, I don't think "legacy" means worth buying. It's a bit of a crapshoot whether you go legacy or buy from a new company IMO.

    Wow, I’m posting.
I have 3 friends that bought Teslas and moved on. That’s anecdotal, but also backed up by lots and lots of articles, videos, etc. about assorted problems, almost all related to them not knowing how to make a car.
If I’m buying an ecar right now, I’m buying the BMW i4. I was already considering the 440, which is a very similar car only ICE. I know the BMW repair system, as I also know the local Toyota, Audi and VW shops. I have no idea where to get a Rivian fixed, nor do I want to talk to some dumbass on the phone while my “rig” ( I live in E. Washington), is bricked at some trailhead.
This is a ski forum. There is no such thing as a binding working in the first iteration. Even Pivots, which are the same since the Pleistocene, fucked up the latest “upgrade”.
My new Golf is a Golf 8. The 8th version, of a really good design. The manual shift linkage, (which isn’t great and I’m gonna mod it), has been in golfs and jettas (and whatever’s), for at least 10 years. It doesn’t break, and works.
Cars, at their most basic, are mechanical things that wear down. I want car people that can run a computer, not nerd balls that think it’d be neato to make a car.

Joined team Rivian recently and hotdamn it’s quickly becoming my favorite vehicle of all time. Have mostly owned Lexus and Porsches in recent years before my last one- a model Y . Had it for two years thirty five K miles. That Y was a pretty good car and had zero problems except that it’s unattractive, a crossover, and attached to one of the biggest POS on the planet.
The R1S captures what I want in a vehicle. It’s our second EV and we’re sold on em to the point we’ll always have one in the garage.
Went for a Rivian that was 2 years old with seven thousand miles at about 60 percent of what the new ones go for. Let me know if you have any questions about the four motor mountain machine.

Plug- you have to remember EVs have very little to no shop time over maintenance. Never went to Tesla for anything. Warranty fixes are another bag but I’m in all of the Rivian forums and people are having great experiences (with some admitted standouts). These companies also have remote repair fleets and I’m reading peoples positive experiences about being hours away from service centers. You’ve got Bellevue currently and Redmond coming online soon.
Keep in mind Rivian makes essentially one vehicle that’s broken into SUV and truck. ChatGPT says BMW makes over 30. Many core BMW people believe, that broadening, has really diluted their focus and prestige. Resulting in higher rate of issues.

Luke, I follow this pretty closely.
Are you disappointed you didn’t get the new Rivian after it lost a mile of wiring.?

I'm in week three of my first EV.

Signed up for a 3 year 45k mile lease on the middle trim (SEL) 2025 Ioniq 5 AWD.

Installed an EVSE in the garage which seems to be the deal maker. One road trip paying for L3 charging and I became a convert of home charging.

Learning as I go, first lesson, don't use a roof box.

How else are you liking or disliking the ioniq? I’m contemplating getting one myself. Work has free chargers and as an electrician it’ll be cheap to install a charger myself at home. I’d still keep my gmc sitters sierra for road trips. Have you driven the ioniq in snow? Curious as to of the added weight of an ev sucks on slippery downhills.

How ghetto would it be to run a home charger off a dryer outlet? I'm EV curious, but my house only has a 100A panel with no extra space for a new 220 circuit. Upgrading to a 200A panel on top of installing a home charger would be $$$$$ and not happening. But, my laundry room shares an exterior wall with my carport so I could theoretically use the dryer outlet since that is 220 and the dryer is only in use a few hours per week.

IANAE, but that sounds pretty ghetto, and kinda dangerous. Like burn the house down dangerous.

    But IANAE.

I say it will be fine. Figure out the amperages and don&#39;t cheap out on the adapter or extension cords. If shoddy electric work always led directly to fires there would be very few houses standing.

That's basically what I did. I already had a welder plug in a convenient location on a 50A fuse. Bought a chargepoint charger - when you buy it, you can configure it to either be set up for hardwired installation, or as a plug in unit with a NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 plug. I needed the 6-50, but your dryer might be a 14-50? Installation was entirely straightforward. Didn't feel the need to hire an electrician, since I was essentially just mounting the thing to the wall and then plugging it in. 6 months in and haven't had any issues at all.

Only thing I'd note is to make sure you have a good way to mount it. The "wall plug" cord is short - maybe 3 feet, so you need to be able to mount it close to the plug. And the "vehicle plug" cord is 20 ft, which doesn't feel that long if your car isn't parked more or less right next to the charger.

I’m not disappointed but I understand the decision point. After research and testimonials in addition to trading messages with Kyle at Out of Spec - it was suggested to get a launch edition over new. Besides my budget would’ve only allowed me to get a dual motor, standard battery - plus 10 thousand dollars. Elected to go for more power, features, and higher build materials that accompany the last produced, launch editions. I suppose the wiring harness and ecu reduction of the second gen could play a bigger role several years down the line.

If you want to check it out and take it for a spin lmk

    Thanks. That’s nice.
I have an almost friend that has one in Mazama, and I could check his out.
I’ve talked about this before, but I don’t like SUV’s or trucks, and right now ecars are suboptimal for rural locations, especially cold ones.
I want an ecar. As I’ve said with my last 2 cars, maybe the next one.
