Is your local resort balancing on a knifes edge?

With what’s going on in Park City right now, I find my self thinking that more resorts are on the edge of chaos than most would like to believe.

Example - Homewood, just closed because of local issues. Did it make money or not? Why is a private ski resort what the new owners are pursuing?

Do ski areas make money? Why are resorts being taking over by PE? Is it only a land play at this point?

Homewood closed because they ran that place into the ground over the last 10 years and they're fucking crybabies upset that their development wasn't approved.

#1. There are ski areas and there are ski Resorts. There is a difference and AFAIK very few ski areas are targeted by PE.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Many ski areas sit on USDA land, the Republicans are doing all in their power to steal it.

snowbasin is my local. They are a private company and the books are not open. They seem to be selling the shit out of passes and pumping as many skiers as possible in there. I'm sure the COO of the mountain is getting a FAT bonus each year and the Holdings/Sinclair are doing great.

Yeah, but are they making enough money to relentlessly force their fucking political ideology down my throat? That’s the real question.

Our local is a non-profit so they don’t really make money. But it was also was just voted Newsweek’s #1 which is unfortunate for the locals.

    Example- Sierra at tahoe
The cal fire nearly destroyed everything over there. Seems like they are struggling. maybe i am wrong. Opening themselves up to ikon seems like the beginning of the end. PE has got to be circling the waters.
A basin opened to ikon then became Aterrra a year later.

I know we can't know a lot that is going on in the board room of these resorts but hoping we can talk about why one crisis is enough to to really knock a resort back. Even Squaw said if they don't get their village approved it would affect lift operations. Just a scare tactic or?

Abasin pass sales are down 40%, business down substantially. Just purchased by Alterra. Charging for parking has scared off locals. In the short term it is awesome for those of us who bought a pass and parking pass. Sucks for tipped employees. Employee morale seems a little down. Are they "On the edge"? I doubt it, but they'll probably be making some decisions after this season that will not benefit the skiers.

Have you seen Snowbowl? I bet you can clear pretty good money deferring all maintenance and snowmaking.

Those are 2 different things. I know JMA was terrible at running resorts so they sold. Discovery are the ones taking it private. Is there opportunity for them at the resort or is it just a real estate play for them?

The small local hill is owned by one guy who is an acountant who is diversifyed in more than this ski hill, operating expenses have been pared down to where all the people stealing off him are gone, equipment gets maintained & repalced, some new runs have been cut some old runs got brushed all for cheap by ski bums, The credit swap crisis was hard on RE sales, phase 1 sold out but it took 15 yrs, I noticed a load of sewer pipe sitting next to the sewage plant for phase 2 I think he makes money most but not all years I think its OK

My thought is that the big resorts are doing ok. Have you seen how absolutely packed they are, all days of the week? Gotta be some big profits coming in.

Little resorts though - they aren't drumming up the same numbers. A lot of smaller spots are getting overlooked, and unless tickets are pretty cheap I don't think they are getting the visits they want.

Disclaimer: I have no real insight into this situation, just guesses.

My local mountain was bought by a Netflix billionaire who in the past 6 months has turned 1/3 of the resort private, instituted paid parking, jacked up season pass prices, and made day ticket prices untenable.

The ikon pass has substantially decreased the skier experience at all the wasatch front ski areas. Weekdays are as busy as weekends used to be. Last year was the busiest season in Alta’s history. Management then decided to cut benefits, pay and hours for certain workers. You can’t even go ski touring out of the town of Alta without paying for parking anymore. If you’re not at snowbird by 8:15, good luck finding parking. Both Cottonwood canyons have traffic issues virtually every day. Social media has played a big role in destigmatizing Utah. And when every family has 5 kids who have 5 kids things get crowded fast on a exponential growth rate. But we still get 20 inch storm days like today. The entire outdoor industry is teetering because they’ve tried to adopt big business tactics instead of focusing on the details they can actually control. I blame the proliferation and subject manner of the entire MBA teaching program of the last 40 years.

    End rant

Locals 1st see a Billionaire buying their hill as "great, a bunch of new lifts and shit and no one here like always".

    And then reality sets in.

In other words, it's so crowded no one goes there anymore?
