Come on, man... driving has been way down on the list for DECADES.

Sure, but has it been on this level?

If I look over and see that choad "driving" along like that I'm getting as far as I can from him and probably calling a cop.

But my bank was acquired by US Bank last year. And apparently the tellers now communicate all questions to their supervisors via a chat app, so she spent way too long, typing, muttering, and starting at her screen than should be necessary. The word fee was murmured several times.

So their new process is to deposit a foreign currency check at face value, then 3-5 days later they will apply a fee "for the exchange". Fine, makes sense. Then she mentions another fee. More typing. Ah yes, there's a $19 fee if the check bounces. Fair enough. It won't bounce.

More typing and staring. Hmmm.... She now tells me there will be a $40-120 fee to cash the check. You can't tell how much? $40 would be annoying, but $120 would wipe out most of the value of the check. Her manager finally comes out, and also can't tell me how much the fee will actually be. And apparently she can't waive it or do anything about it. "All the banks are doing this now". Wonderful. Fuck all of the banks with a red hot poker.

So I just tore the check up in front of them. I'd rather my parents keep their money than give a chunk of it to the bank.

That’s what I thought when I read BMills response.

People have been, are, and will be idiots.

Seems about as safe as the guy I worked with back in the 90’s that would read the newspaper while he drove. Full fold out across the steering wheel. Held with both hands, drove with his knee, occasionally looked up to see where he was going.

I cannot fathom not enjoying driving, let alone paying attention while in the car. It's such a sensory thing and I dig it. I've loved it since I was a kid on dad's lap shifting the gear knob while he pedaled the clutch. I used to run over my sister's barbies with my tonka trucks and hot wheels, always setting up lego tracks with jumps for rallying. I could not wait to get my license.

The near-death of the manual transmission was one of the first signs of disengagement of drivers. Also the automatic seat-belt thingy that was on a track & would secure you in after you shut the door. How lazy humans have become, designing things that suppress basic thinking and response.

I do sometimes miss having a manual transmission, definitely made driving a lot more fun and engaging.

But can you imagine OTHER people not giving two shits about the whole process?

I've drilled into my kids' heads that driving is 98.5% about paying attention to things while you're behind the wheel. At *all* times. Dunno if that's enough... but I'm hoping it was.

I pay attention when I drive and I don't do all that other shit that takes my attention off the road. I also hate driving and generally being in a car. It's a waste of time. I like trains.

Fuck, you're not kidding. And if we haven't hit peak Idiocracy yet, here's a reminder from the Transportation Secretary reminding you not to wear your Apple device on your face while operating a motor vehicle.

I guess it's time to find a way to integrate a dashcam into the car. Fuck these idiots.

Yes, I think about it daily as I start my engine. I'm even more of a defensive driver than I used to be.

My favorite are drivers who cannot anticipate because they have an attention span of a gnat.

I also feel like having a giant ipad as your command center is further distracting to too many inexperienced/younger drivers/tech-challenged, with their cell phone tethered to their car's UI. The glitchiness, or non-intuitive layers of many UIs paired with different iOS/Android software variances tend to add to the distraction level for all ages it seems.

All of a sudden my home PC opens Microsoft Edge whenever I click on a web link in an email. I've got Chrome set as the default browser and associated with both htm and html extensions and it still opens the link with Edge instead. WTF Microsoft? Is this happening for anyone else?

Happens to my wife over and over and it isn't easy to get rid of--I can't remember how at the moment. I'd hate to think you have the same computer skills as my wife. (Or me for that matter.) It hasn't happened to me. I still have 10, she has 11, maybe that's part of it? (She also doesn't know how she wound up switching to 11.)

Yup! Sneaky nerds at MS decided to slip that one in on Outlook at least. Just started happening to me too, but I found the solution. Go to your options, then go to Advanced, then set it back from Edge to "default browser." See pic below I just screenshot for you.

I've had a bunch of similarly annoying stuff happen lately.

When I recovered my laptop and got it going again, I started getting a warning that my user password would expire and needed to be changed. That's happening every 30 days now. Have read a bunch of different how-to articles on how to change it, and despite being for the same operating system none of them describe the same sequence of menus and options I see when I try to turn it off. Can't find anywhere to turn it off.

The other thing that's happening is everything is now getting backed up to Google OneDrive. I specifically turned that off, or thought I did. Takes up a bunch of bandwidth and I don't exactly trust google with my files. I back everything up myself to an external hard drive.

Syncing of user profiles across devices is another annoying thing I've tried to avoid but seems unavoidable. Had to change a microsoft password after trying to get back on my laptop after it died, then had trouble accessing things on my phone. It seems to mess with all sorts of logins for various things like email, google, microsoft, etc. Each used to have separate logins but with profiles linked seems like now they go off the same password. Hard enough to remember passwords normally, and really doesn't help when you don't know which one to use.

And I've tried a password manager on my laptop. It's not much better. Doesn't save passwords half the time, and tries to save Pin numbers and security codes from 2FA as passwords. I'd ask about other ones out there, but would have to ask about data breaches for them first because they all seem to be getting hit by hackers as well?

    Annoying.

Sure. Problem is these are parents who get confused about the simplest things and forget almost everything, and at the same time obsess about other things that don't really matter. For example they are worried about how much each it costs when I phone them. So guess what they do even though I tell them the calls are included free in my cell phone plan....they write me a check. I can ignore those but occasionally they need to send funds for something bigger I paid for when I'm not there to take them to the bank to get cash. So I need a simple way for them to send funds for cases like that. Sent them a funds request via paypal for the latest one. So far they haven't even been able to log in. Can't seem to win.

You're a hero. Thanks for this!

edit: Jesus, it took me about five minutes to even find where the "options" menu is hidden. Go to File and it's at the very bottom left. What a dumb ass option. Why would you NOT want Outlook links to open in the default browser? Fuckers.
