When you think you're tough cause you rode in the desert for 400 miles in 2 days.
Guy flies from Australia to San Diego and buys a KTM 500. Rides it to Ensenada. Enters the Baja 1000. Finishes with no support or pre run.

Oh, nice, I didn't watch it before because I was on the phone. There was a guy in the Dust 2 Glory movie in 2017 who did kinda the same thing. Pretty amazing feat. Sounds like he had the advantage of a lot of other pits helping him out and just stopped at gas stations along the way. Fuckin legend! Haha.

Upgraded my off-road tire changing stand. If anyone in the SLC area would like a hand with mousses, tubliss, or tubes, I’m happy to help.

Nice! Have you tried this with mousses? Were you able to set the bead?

Yep, been on mousses for about 4 years now. I have been using a simple Tusk portable changing stand and also have used the Rabaconda and Moose branded version.

Generally the bead isn’t a problem until the mousse really starts shrinking or is quite undersized. Sometimes one of the following can help: tease the bead along other sections of rim, a blast of air through the unused valve stem hole, or just ride it for a few miles. If none of that works, a second bead lock or just deal with it.

My Michelin bib mousses have been lasting 12 to 20 months depending on various factors and assuming the starting firmness is reasonable. I’m also exclusively using genuine silicone lube from Michelin or Neutech. I like tire soap for the bead, but in my experience it doesn’t last long as a mousse lube.

Yeah well I found out the hard way on this. Once upon a time I had my neutech installed by a local SLC shop (pm if you want name) and I offered a couple tubes of nitro gel. He declined, saying “we have a bucket of that in the back. “

Well come to find out he did not use the nitro moose lube and on my second tire running the rear Moose (I was about maybe 2000 miles total so far on the mousse itself) the thing blew up inside the tire leaving me with a huge wheel hop while on a week trip. It was still somewhat rideable tho.

Back at camp, we had to snip the wire bead of the tire to get the thing off so we could install spare tube /tire. It was quite an effort. I use liberal amounts of the nitro lube nowadays.Click image for larger version.

Anyone with reqs for Arizona dirt bike riding? Thinking about a trip down from SLC to explore down that way, so ideally either one awesome place or a few good ones to make the drive worth it.

For me the harder the singletrack the better, not trying to mess around with two tracks or open desert riding.

I remember you were a big proponent of the mousse tires. Are you still liking them? Any interest in the Tubeliss? I've been debating one or the other for a while.

I leave a valve stem in the hole with the tube cut away. Allows me to bead the tire really easily with mousses.

Also a big proponent of mousse for my specific application. Tubliss failed me twice way out in the backcountry. Mousse has failures as shown above, but keep the mousse lubed and proper mousse size to tire ratio is a good 2 rule recipe for a happy mousse and rider. Mousse is a dead feel compared to air. Hard to describe. Some like that. Some hate that.

Disclaimer: 2 stroke singletrack rider. I almost never ride road for length at speed. Heat also kills mousses.

EDIT: Bike must be on stand when not in use or you will get flat spots on the mousse.

Good to know. I ride some pavement on the way to trails mostly, but sometimes in the desert i ride longer distance. Ive (knock or wood) never gotten a flat riding, with 4mm tubes and 15 psi but i want to ride lower psi for traction and cushion. 450 4 stroke, but i ride singletrack.

I’ve got nuetech moose on both 450 4T and 300 2T currently. I recently moved to the neutech platinum Moose for the 300 and I think on my next tire change I will change the front one to a plush. The platinum front is a little punchy and has that dead feeling that Percy talks about. I think a plush softer moose will help with this.

While I try to avoid pavement, the reality is that riding from my buddies house in Moab typically leads to pavement in some fashion or another. Up to 15ish miles at a stretch. It’s hilarious because of the 450 chews up highway miles at 65 no problem where the 300 is rapped out even with sprocket changes. The 300 feels like it might explode on the highway sometimes so I try not to push it too fast and I vary the RPMs accordingly.

Lastly, I will just add that Kyle at dirtbike channel really likes the tubliss set up because he can run very very low pressures and that is good for the technical writing he likes to do. I would definitely like to have a softer front end on the 300 but I am reluctant to use the tubeless system due to its documented problems. I don’t like dealing with tire issues.

If you go with a nitro plushie just note that they are HEAVY. Some folks avoid using them in the front for that reason.

Since there’s a few Utah residents here, I thought I’d share that my 2021 300xcw is for sale:

Thanks, I guess I have till spring to figure it out now. Still considering throwing a timbersled kit on the 450 then buying a 300 2T but apparently money doesn't grow on trees. Who knew?

My plan is to pick up a 2024 300xcw if I get this sold. I’ve had 5 variations of this generation and ready for a change (2017 xc, 2019 xcw, 2021 te, 2017 te, and this 2021 w).

Some interesting news. Although not too surprising. We’re already seeing more Asian supplied components on the existing 2023/2024 bikes. Radiators for example.

wow, that's a thorough analysis of the genre. i've put about 3k miles on my 2022 300 XCW to date and very much diggin it. sounds like i should hit you up for a ride sometime given our similar geographic disposition.
