The new -2017- CAST touring system thread

Some folks might not get my "tolerance stacking" comment in my previous post. I was in a rush, so I might as well clarify for those who might be interested.

When you're fabricating a part that mates to another (lets say a male rod and a female hole ... 'coz this is TGR), each part has a specified tolerance range. It depends on the machine shop as to what their default number is, as well as how tight a range they're either willing or able to achieve. Typical default is .005".

    ---

Let's say you have a male thingie that's specified at 1.000 (-.005/+0). That's .995 to 1.000. Any part that meets this spec is considered acceptable.

So now, you're another manufacturer (let's say Cascade) and you need to make a female thingie to mate with that part.

You're no doubt, in the dark as to the spec the male parts are manufactured to, and you're only avenue is to sample as many parts as you can, and then assume that these are representative of their (CAST's) tolerance range. You probably add a bit of extra wiggle room, due to uncertainty.

So, let's assume you derived the above spec (.995 to 1.000). I'll write the tolerances in this format from here on out, for simplicity. Due to uncertainty, you expand the spec to .993 to 1.002.

Now you have to make a batch of parts that have their own tolerance range. So, you specify holes that are 1.003-1.005 (a .002 range). This "ensures" their biggest rod will fit in your smallest hole (that's what she said).

So now, your customer has a small rod (.995) and you present them with a big hole (1.005). It's not very satisfying, as .010 is a lot of slop in some applications.

What if your sample size wasn't representative and it is in fact .995 to 1.005. Your smallest hole is now too tight (1.003).

In my case, three out of four toes fit fine, and the one that didn’t (purple toe) was 0.012” thicker than its mate. That’s a QC fail, in my opinion.

QC fails suck. .012" is huge :-(

If you buy the CAST pillars they will always fit with no fucking around. I understand the Cascade Designs reason for being but the fucking around thing has me confused. One benefit to CD is the easy use of inserts. Too many variable to use inserts with CAST pillars.

anyway, I'd stay away for the first year or two... Just like the current version. I was among the first people who purchased and first version worked awfully for me. I bought latest generation earlier this year and it works almost flawlessly (though, there are still many things I'd wish they will improve)

Anything specific? I just got the current gen and really like them. The risers seem a little flimsy but work as advertised, just not super easy to get up if they are covered in snow and youve got mitts on.

just returned from a 7 day hut touring trip. Honestly, I decided I would only use CAST as a travel binding/occasional sidecountry or if I plan some epic alaska-like line, where I want to feel extremely confident.

however, talking about minor issues... After 7 days I figured out following:
    - risers are PITA. Their placement is awkward, I really had to spend a minute each time I wanted to flip the first riser. Also you have to apply lot of force to do that.
    - after a week of touring one of the tech toes developed some kind of bends (or I don't even know how to call them) and now one of the toes sticks before sitting in lock mode, while the other one works like butter. Initially both worked perfectly
    - icing of the bottom part of toe locks on tech toes. The bottom part of the lock (small metal plate) that slides when you press on the black knob has a hole under it and water gets there. Problem is - lock seals this hole and water sits there for a very long time. If you leave toes in your backpack in a pouch, next morning water will still be there. I toured in cold conditions -15-20F and that resulted in 2 things - not able to open the lock in the end of the climb (it's frozen) and you have to use poles or something else to move the knob and break the ice, and the other one - when you are at the start, toe won't lock down on the ski (before you step in with a boot and completely lock it out).
    - one of my look toes developed play (without boot being locked in). I know that was discussed a lot and CAST commented that is OK, however the other toe has no play and initially both toes were sitting perfectly.
    - last, most obvious - time spent on hike to ski transition. As you mentioned, you have to clean the the toe part and metal knobs perfectly because even a slight piece of snow interrupts with toe parts locking correctly. Whole thing with toe change takes more time than with Duke PT, not even mentioning Shifts. If you are going on a one run mission, that is OK, but if you are lapping a smaller mountain and you have 2-3-4 runs a day, that really adds significant amount of time

Just from spy photos and the profile, it’s a toe piece that mounts to the ski and the toes slide on and off. Mitigating issues with post alignment

Assuming you can mount the new CAST onto a ski that already has Pivot 15s mounted at rec....and the mount position (eg rec) stays the same on the ski?

    Thx

Id be willing to bet that you can use the same holes for a regular Pivot mount. It's one of the things that the whole CAST system is based on.

Fingers crossed the new pivot has the same mount pattern

I thought the rumors are that it's pretty minor changes to the Pivot? I can't see them changing the pattern since it's the same across all DIN and generations.

Where are these spy shots referenced above? If there’s something more than the profile pics here and on the Cast website, can you give us some crumbs?
