They make nearly flat LEDs now that look exactly like can lights. Worth it.

This is what we put into our kitchen. No drop ceiling necessary. They are like half an inch thick.

Yeah, I have some laying in front of me right now. The drop ceiling is mainly to cover the single layer of T&G wood that is simultaneously our kitchen ceiling and bedroom floor. Maybe drop ceiling is a bad phrase, it is just adding a layer to brighten up the kitchen, and some sound dampening so that the person sleeping in bed doesn't hear my wife making her god awful florescent green smoothy in the 10 yo bullet every morning. and stuff.

These stupid survival reality competition shows where the contestants kill animals.

The killing isn’t for survival, it for advertising dollars. Just seems wrong.

Naked and Afraid mainly. Stupid and annoying

Given all the brain cells they are frying on the watchers' end, it seems like a decent sacrifice.

    SRISLY???

We have yet to scratch the surface of the narcissism universe. Just as there is no bottom for Trump, there is no top for narcissists.

Oh, weird. I see. Sounds like you're dealing with some funky original construction, then.

If you're serious about isolating the noise between floors, start your research here. You can give them a call too. Great company. They helped me with a project I did. Between their Green Glue (between double layer thick drywall) and isolation clips, the results were fantastic.

Do something like this and the awful morning smoothy noises should (mostly) become a thing of the past...

While on the subject of sound insulation, the sound mixing for most movies and shows is fucking annoying. Ok I get it, movies are mixed for the theater, but Netflix series? And video's gone to shit with HDR.

This is a perennial topic. Much has been written online. I fucking hate it. I've gotten to the point where I use subtitles if available.

Yeah, I’m also using subtitles now as well. Mrs Flake works from home and the sudden loud noises drive her insane.

While we're being annoyed at TV and movies, why is everything filmed so fucking dark now? Like whole scenes will be pretty much unwatchable it's so dark.

    Cataracts?

On a more serious note - how old is your TV? Recent models handle dark much better and can be personalized to your eyeballs.

    Shit that annoys you

I think the problem is that shows and movies are edited in pitch dark rooms with high end sound systems and are optimized for that. Not my five year old Samsung TV and cheap sound bar in my living room during daylight hours

Edit to add that there’s also this style of shooting right now to preserve highlight detail at all costs even if it crushes your shadows and makes the scene overall too dark.

The flip side to this is all the old shows that try to convince us it's nighttime simply by shooting during the day but underexposing by a couple stops.

Shooting day for night still happens! The movie Nope was shot day for night. I think mostly cause it’s cheaper and easier on the crew. They’ve gotten a lot better at it over the years.

Not surprising. I can imagine it would make things much easier.

Yeah. I’ve recently been nerding out on how movies I like are shot and all the little tricks they use is fascinating.

None of this is technically true. The DPs are making these moody dark scenes by choice, it could all look better with more light during production or better choices while color correcting. But they don't give a shit and there is a big disconnect between what they see on $25000 monitors and joe shmoe sees on their old TV.

As for sound, they should do a basic 'even' mix called 'crappy TV" that you can select.
