Not relevant to my opinion of people living and commuting in a coastal temperate climate (Seattle, avg winter temps are over 45 degrees and no snow on the ground)

If you live in Calgary, yes please use snow tires.

When I lived in Denver I had winter tires too. And if I lived in Vancouver and went to ANY ski hill every weekend I would want Winters or all-weathers.

But don't trust me... Google it. Or don't and keep doing what you want... I was just trying to share some perspective.

He’s not looking for a shared perspective, he’s looking for a confirmation of his biases.

I don't think buying winter tires for Calgary is stupid but clearly you're the expert.

Good luck on the roads this winter.

Reading comprehension ain’t your thing I guess.

To sum it up for you, if you live somewhere with freezing temps and snow please use snow tires.

If you live somewhere warm without snow and just drive a well maintained highway once a week and only drive through snow in the parking lot, probably can survive with decent all weathers.

Yup I got that. I comprehended where you live and your ski commute and I personally would use tires other than all seasons.

I explained to you why I personally think that's short sighted and was trying to be respectful about that.

So you keep doing you.

I guess we all just do ourselves anyway right?

I commute 300-325 miles a week on warm (45+ degrees) pavement in a 4Runner. Soft snow tires will just wear off and pollute the local water ways even more so I decide to take the “risk” of not using them and haven’t had any issues in the last 16 years.

Just my experience.

When I lived in Pennsylvania snow tires went on in November and came off in April.

FWIW, if I were in your shoes, driving to the mountains every weekend, I’d be putting on high-performance/Central European winter tires; assuming you have the space to store two sets of wheels.

Better wear than ‘Nordic’ winter tires, like Hakka, VikingContact, etc. but still better snow and cold weather traction than all seasons. Can also run the all-seasons right down instead of switching them out early to maintain snow traction.

Ordered a set of BF Goodrich Advantage TA LT 3PMSF rated all season/ all weather tires for the RAV4. Decided it was probably better to get a 3PMSF rated tire for the "winter" set, though the RAV4 did fine on the fairly mediocre Firestone Destination LE2 that came with it from the factory. Those are pretty much worn out now.

We have a second set of takeoff wheels that have those same Firestone tires, with around 7/8-32" left. Those will be back on the vehicle after winter.

We did this with her Xterra too - rotate through two sets of all seasons, with the freshest tread on for winter. Worked well. Never bothered with true winter tires on it, they just wear out too fast in Mrs C's usage and our typically dry road conditions.

There are a lot of tire shops and dealerships around me that will store your second set of tires (for a fee of course), so you are not fucked if you want 2 sets and live in a condo or something.

Is that a thing in the US?

At one time in history, I drove a 2WD farm truck with bias ply tires, with only chains for slippery conditions! Egads! And survived!
What do I win?

I now have 3 vehicles in my personal fleet and 15 at work that I oversee, including one that qualifies as a real ‘truck’ (F450 dually crewcab with a 10ft flatdeck). Local weather means pavement temps are <10C for 4months of the year with the potential for 1m snowpacks at valley bottom.

Wife’s Hyundai Elantra had dedicated cheep all seasons and dedicated winter x-ice snows michelins. My tacoma has Nokias all terrain Rotiiva AT for their first try. Will carry chains. The half ton just got Nokias Outpost AT this spring, and will run them this winter until I don’t like them and then put on the studded Hakks. Will report out on both the Rotiivas and Outposts. One thing for sure, they both hold 1/2” pebbles from the forestry road for the tailgaters on the highway.

Local tire shop (only one in town), will store a set of tires for $80CND/yr; I store mine at home and swap them myself, but the work fleet tires we keep at the shop. AT in summer, studded hakks in the winter.

"All weather" tires in place of winter tires

I feel like this thread needs this distinction:

All Season - The tires you get OEM on your Kia Sorento. Some may be M+S rated, but that’s just a spec for the thread depth and width. Maybe slightly more siping than a passenger tire. Rubber compound will get hard in cold temps. Generally no bueno in severe winter weather.

All Weather - Have a snowflake/mountain rating. More siping. Rubber compound designed to stay soft when it’s cold. Legal to run without chains as “snow tires” or “traction tires” in some (most?) jurisdictions. Longer lasting and better dry performance than full Winter tires.

All Weathers were literally invented for what we are talking about - a tire you can leave in your vehicle year around, but if you occasionally need to drive in severe winter weather, you’ll be fine.

You sound like a shitty driver who needs good snow tires to me. Thank you for recognizing that you have a skill deficiency and need to stack the deck for the safety of the other drivers who know what the fuck they are doing.

IME the snow in Vangroovy is all at around zero so its more slippery than deer guts on a door knob, more slippery than snow at -15 or - 30 so you actualy DO really need real snow tires in vangroovy but no body has snow tires or shovels or the clothing or the skills to drive in it so for the once or twice a year just stay home

but go 800 kms narth to PG where there is snow 5 months of the year where at -15 the snow actualy has a lot of traction and ever buddy has their shit together cuz without the gear they don't get around, don't go to work, don't get paid

so you can see 800 worth of snowtires on a 500$ car at the mall

so ironicaly the people who need real snow tires in vangroovy just stay home '

which is no problem cuz the boss also stayed home

i forget which year maybe 2000 but a big snow year so out on the highway i watched 3 vehicals roll into the ditch at speed

I had to I wade thru a buncha knee deep snow to knock on the window of an upside down car in the ditch to ask "hey are you OK"

fortunately there were only injuries on 1 of 3 rollovers but there could have been dead people

I can keep a car on the road in the snow pretty well regardless of tire choice.

Well I can too, but it’s better with winter tires. That’s not what this is about though, right?
