Exactly. They're (the government) all over the place here. Seems like they are using these hoops as a deterrent to crossing the border, which is so stupid. If they want to discourage cross-border travel, then close the damn border. Require a list of exceptions if you want - whatever. But don't make up all these bullshit inconveniences under the guise of keeping the population safe. It's kind of insulting at this point.

At this point (well, I guess in like 8 weeks) anyone in Canada who is 5+ is able to be fully vaccinated. If you yourself are vaccinated, you've done your part. Jamming a q-tip up your nose every day isn't necessary, and nobody should ever expect that of you.

Unless of course you are going to be visiting somewhere that has high-risk people or whatever, but that should go without saying. Definitely not at a place of leisure like a ski resort though.

Also, if you are crossing the border for less than 72 hours to go drink in a crowded bar or for some socially distanced skiing, and you come in contact with Covid, there is zero point in testing said traveler as they aren't going to test positive from their adventures as it takes at least 5 days to manifest. So if you get tested on your return trip to Canada and it's been less than 72 hours, its probably because you slept with one of your relatives before you left the country.

They're not instant and they're not free. It takes 15-20 minutes to get a result, you need space to store people waiting for a result and you need staff to administer the test. The test kit is around $10. If someone tests positive then what? That's another logistical problem.

Definitely is the area to go touring on the East coast. I have not been over to Murdochville. Hear it’s nice, but seems a bit more ski area-ish than in the parc and Mount Lyall. Are you back East for the whole winter?

Yes back here for atleast this winter. Bike riding has been good but im still not sure how the ski search will go. Friends are on "BC" gear that are basically xc skis w metal edges so beta interpretations vary

all true, but those pcr tests, zoom calls, covid calls,
sending police by houses, etc aren’t free either.

and there’s a place to have people wait where they do inspections, at the big crossings they’re pretty sophisticated and you’re penned in. even if it took 20 minutes to get a result if you’re chosen that’s more convenient than the pcr drop off stuff.

i think the biggest issue would probably be that the border people wouldn’t want to do it.

You took the rapid test and then they marshaled everyone into a waiting room with a couple giant screens. Once your test ID came up on the screen you were able to proceed to the check-in area. Certainly the same kind of thing could be done at the border, but it would require the facilities and the staff, and that's probably a significant hurdle. With their current process they don't need any additional staff at the border.

I've been hearing that they're not requesting that but it seems like the guidelines says you need to? Confused whether to plan on hanging around Vancouver for a few days till I get the result or whether I can just do the test and go onwards to Whistler and wait instead.

Yeah the guidelines do seem to have some double speak. If you enter fully vaccinated with a negative pcr test within 72 hours and are randomly selected for a test you are free to go awaiting results.

My buddy operates a Mobile paramedic Business. 2 years ago he was almost broke due to the oil industry slowdown. He changed his business model to covid testing when this all hit and now he just purchased 500acres with a pimpin house....

Not for me, but this was entering by land. Border agent just handed me the test kit and told me it needed to completed within 24 hours.

Same. But then he couldn't tell me where to drop it off "maybe the shoppers drug in Trail? Idk I've never done one". Never even got the results. Happy to play by the rules but it just seems like a waste

Easiest thing for me was to just google the location of the nearest Purolator drop box (or whatever shipper they tell you to use). There was one in Lethbridge. I knew I had to do it before I got to Lake Louise because there was nowhere to drop it off up there and I didn't want to hassle with scheduling a pick up. Oh and I snapped a pic of me dropping it in the box.

Everyone's wearing a mask and the room isn't all that crowded. Not to mention everyone had already been tested within 72 hours. I'd say the risk was quite low.
