    wifi router hacked?

    So I got an email saying my TP Link AC1750 router had been hacked and they have all my contacts etc and to send them $$$. I have tried to log into tplinkwifi.net on my VPN network to change the password with no success.

    So maybe they did hack it. Should I just order a new router? If yes, what do you guys like? Thanks

    I really like our Apple Airport Extreme. Simple to use and keep updated, and reaches every corner of my house. Works fine with my mix of PCs, iphones, Roku, Epson printer, etc.

    Download the instructions, press the manual reset button (might need a paperclip), login to the router with the default password and set it up again

    O and don't be a dumb ass like me. Make sure your router/modem has an updated password, as mine was set with the factory reset ones

    You need to do the following also to be safer. First check the manufacturer for new or the latest version of the firmware that is available. If there was an issue and vulnerability , then hopefully updating it will help. Also of course DO NOT USE THE SAME PASSWORD as you may have used on other web sites or online that could be for an account that was Pwned. AND of course it is a given that you do not leave the router with the manufacturer's default password either. First step is to secure and update the password out of the box. Make sure you do not have remote admin enabled at least for now. You want to use a complex password also not password1 or 12345678...

    It's probably a scam, in the sense that they're lying to you about having hacked anything. They probably found (or paid for) a list of credentials that got exposed in somebody else's hack, and are sending threatening emails to everybody on the list hoping that a few idiots pay up.

    But yeah, reset your router, download the latest firmware, set a non-default password, and change certain settings that some website will recommend (sorry, haven't done this chore all that recently).
