    New iMac announced today.

    http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/10...w-imac-lineup/

So nice looking. Thought this belonged in here.
Look at the 27 inch display #'s. Is that better than the retina display?
The thing must weigh almost nothing. 3 tb of memory will be nice too.

Not a fanboi, just a huge iMac fan. The machine I am on now is an orig. 2006 intel one.
Thing has been bomber for 6 years, not one virus program on it. Not one hiccup.

Was just telling my wife this morning that I will wait until the new release. After seeing all the new stuff they are releasing, I just knew a new one would be out soon.
I would say that it is weird timing, but Apple seems to have a new release every 3 months, so not that big of a surprise.

Apple’s new iMacs also feature four USB 3 ports, a headphone jack, SD card, Thunderbolt and Gigabyte Ethernet. There is also an option for a new Apple Fusion Drive which features both a 128 SDD and a 1TB or a 3TB HDD and will be fused together with software. Documents will sit on the HDD while core applications will be stored on the SSD. The disks will do this automatically.

That is what I've been waiting for. Man this thing is going to be fast.

This looks pretty intriguing. I just got a (previously) current generation Imac last Fall though, so I'll be waiting a while to upgrade.

I wonder how easy it is to install RAM in the new thing body. I popped 12GB in mine after buying it and saved a bunch on what it would have cost having it factory installed. I wonder if this is made harder.

i like the thinness though. I carry around my Imac quite a bit, and while the all-in-one-ness of it makes that easy, it could be lighter.

    iMac looks really nice...
iPad Mini, meh... expensive thing too.
rebranded multi drive dooohicky, maybe they'll be able to market it better than others have.

The story has been the tablet dominance... 91% of internet traffic from tablets is via the iPad...

Mind me asking why you carry your iMac around a lot

The 21" will not be user upgradeable, the 27" will.

Until one of the drives tanks and takes both down with it.

Also, Apple abandoning Firewire completely with this gen. Interesting.

If they are 2 separate drives with you OS living on one and data on the other, I'm sure it won't be a problem.

And i'm not too surprised about the FW. They have been trying to phase that out for a while with the integration of thunderbolt and USB3 since they are both way faster. FW800 is dying a slow death.

True, that's the smart way to do it (OS+Apps on SSD). Doesn't mean it's how they did it though. Apple doesn't have the greatest track record with HD's (see firewire corruption issues on external drives). Hopefully they kept it simple and didn't do some stupid swap file shenanigans.

I am willing to wait for the kinks to get worked out.
21 releases first, so if they have issues, they will get worked out before the 27 is released.
I am looking to buy it in March or April I think.

But I did read the OS makes decisions based on how often you use certain files. That is a little troubling. For me I manage this myself with my OS on my SSD and all my media on HDD's RAIDed

Well to be fair, the population at large know very little about computers. I bet half of what I just typed would be lost on many many people and it wasn't even techy.

Fine, storage space. Is that better?

How much memory can you cram into this thing?

Apple says 32GB for the 27", but OWC somehow always comes out and doubles that capacity for most machines. 21" is 16GB. If you get the 27" I wouldn't upgrade the RAM through Apple. 21" you're forced to.

Obviously. But if you want to know photo and video storage and processing, you should know computers. Which is why I save those comments for this forum.

That setup seems pretty harmless but like with most things involving apple, it would be nice to have more control over it.

Do we know for sure that there is no way to make it full manual? I bet there is.

Saw that 32 gb listed on Apple's official page. Man, that screen looks awesome.

Yeah, I will upgrade the RAM myself. Gonna get the dual SDD and HDD though. I like that feature with Timemachine backing me up too.

I hate how they ditched the 24 inch model. For me its the perfect size for photo editing, as the 27 just seems like overkill.. but to each his own; the specs do look pretty rocking

Since you aren't going to jump on it right away you may want to look into other options once aftermarket places get their hands on them and find out other solutions. Their current options are:
    •3TB hard drive
    •1TB or 3TB Fusion Drive
    •768GB of flash storage

If I were you I'd probably get the cheapest and swap out for something different. If it's user customizable it is ALWAYS cheaper to do it yourself.

For example my next 13" MBP, I'm getting the standard 500GB HDD model with 4GB RAM. Then get the OWC datadoubler kit to pull the optical drive, install a Mercury 240GB SSD and put the 500 GB in place of the optical (or I could get an external for the same price but never use optical drives anyway) and putting in 16GB RAM. So for 15 minutes of my time, I am getting a physical 500GB HDD and a 240GB SSD inside of my laptop and 16GB RAM for less than Apple would charge me for a 256 SSD w/ 4GB RAM. 3 times the storage, 4 times the memory and a faster SSD.
