arc teryx has some really nice wool offerings. I have regent cardigan and another hoody, which is now way too big.

They are cut more for urban/lifestyle use than active wear, however.

My sister has a small internet store of wool clothing. I have a bunch of the stuff and really like it. Got a jacket last spring and have yet to use it. Will be using it this winter.

Carhartt Men's Duck Detroit Jacket - Blanket Lined - bullet proof. I also had a genuine U. S. Navy peacoat once that was amazing when I hitchhiking across the county in winter.

Marmot makes (made?) a wool-poly blend jacket. I think it's called the exergy? Picked it up on steep and cheap a while back for ~50 bucks. It's pretty warm, lightweight, doesn't stink, etc. I would recommend it if it's still available.

Icebreaker realfleece is awesome. I've got the aspiring hood and it kicks ass. I'd prefer the hood be a bit bigger, but I'm very happy with it.

Try this one. I've used it for years. Both the nor and swe armies issues them now.

The 600. Runs pretty large. I'm 190/85 and M is a good fit for me

you should have a waterproof/water resistant outer layer to take care of the wind and water instead of depending on a pourous outer layer

wool isnt windproof/waterproof either and I have found merino base layers to not wear as well as poly

plastic can insulate as well as wool but what wool does that poly can't IME wearing them on week long hut trips or inside dry suits is not stink when you sweat ... wear a wool base layer that will touch your skin and the hardier wearing cheaper plastic for the insulation

Tried and true in the PNW forest industry for decades. Warm, durable, no stink, reasonable price and doesn't melt onto skin when an ember lands on it. My insulation layer under my rain/wind breathable hardshell.

    Marmot Adamant Jacket. Wool/softshell hybrid.
I have an older version (2006) with membrain waterproof fabric and pit zips. Warm and windproof. A little on the heavy side.
It's a medium and in perfect shape. Make me an offer...

thank you all for the great advice, and lots of things to check out.

this idea started with seeing a filson double mackinaw. i like the wool, but wanted something cut more like a ski jacket.

i already have wool base layers and mid-layers. i really like wool. i also have all 3 weights in patagonia synthetic base layers, but wool has replaced them.

so i wanted a sturdy thick wool outer layer jacket.and i have a gortex shell to go over it.

Perfect timing, I'm shopping for a wool coat as well. Although I'm looking more for the 'wear around town/hiking in the PDX drizzle' rather than something to go under my hard shell.

I'm looking at all the recommendations and, as usual, wish more jackets came in tall sizes.

You checked out the older "guide style" sweaters? Marmot made one that was pretty heavy weight, and nice, here's one used:

    Patagonia had similar

I've got a Filson jacket I love, wear it around town all winter. It's too bulky and heavy to take in the bc, or even the resort, for my purposes. I have a Paty guide sweater I've had for nearly twenty years that is extremely warm, what I use on cold resort days, too warm for most bc days. If I wanted a wool jacket that's cut to layer, I'd look at Ibex, great stuff and designed for the bc.

follow up.here is what i learned.

wool is great stuff. ebay is a great place to buy it, but can be addictive.

a good wool jacket is far warmer and far more windproof than any fleece, even with windblocker.

look carefully at the collar. filson was too rough on my neck.

got an ibex 400 wt. loden wool, but not very warm or windproof compared to others. does layer well and breathes well.retail price high ($240) and not worth it. got one for $70 on CL.

got a double layer wool jacket which is amazingly warm and windproof for $30 on ebay.can layer underneath and add gore-tex if needed.better than ibex.

many "hunting "style wool jackets on ebay from llbean, woolrich, pendeton, etc which go for $20 to $40.even some high end labels for a bit more than the cali sales tax would be retail.

ended up with 4 really good jackets for about half the price of a retail filson.
