Slide on KT at squaw today

    http://sierrasun.com/article/2008010...PAGE/397701622

A patrol at alpine told me this happened today.

    Apparently a 5' crown about 200' across?
Sounds like a big friggin slide to me. Regardless how may times a PR person just says 'post control release'

I hope the dudes are ok.

In all seriousness, what is up with the number of "post control releases" aka in-bounds avalanches. I have now seen 2 and the aftermath of another 2 at Mammoth in the last 2 maybe 3 years. There have been 2 this year alone, then the Climax one, and another one on Scotty's last year. Most have been big enough to mess some one up if in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

I don't remember nearly seeing/hearing about as many in the past, in fact pretty much never until 2 years ago...

Different snow packs, wind, Patrol managment, turnover, experience, ????

But whether it happened before or after control work, and avy is an avy. Saying it isn't an avy makes no sense at all, controlled or otherwise.

The snow was super stubborn this morning. A lot of places were sliding big, and others just sluff. Who knows, maybe if they threw a double shot rather than a single it would have gone, maybe not. I'm sure Squaw's patrol thought it was safe. While shooting a slope is a pretty good test of stability, it's still doesn't get everything.

Apparently 3 foot average crown with 5 foot max. Ran pretty deep, Wolverine at Alpine ran all the way through the flats, nearly made it to the face.

I spent an hour in the same probe line, and heard that a woman was also injured in the same slide.

Its absolute pussy bullshit whoever the fuck at Squaw made the call to try and call it a "post control release." An avy is an avy, weather you've bombed the area or not. I am not a patroller and I dont know the techniques or practises of the Squaw Valley Ski Patrol, but I sure would say that their PR department need to get straightened out.

Too bad that an inbounds avalanche sounds shitty to uninformed public. It still happened. So cop to it.

    Vibes to those injured

The lawyers won't allow it. As argued in the stuff all over the highway in Utah thread, start your negotiation either real low or real high, work from there.

It is a shame they don't call it what it is: an avalanche.

But 'tis PR and that's what they do:

    "it's not a war, it's a conflict"
    "it's not a lie, it's a miscommunication"

i'd like to give some serious props to the squaw patrol... saw the slide on the way up the lift, the east side of KT was closed by the time i got to the top (<3min), by the time i got down KT was closed. 3 people stuck, all of them rescued.... no major injuries. when KT opened later it was sick.
    Still waiting...

Props indeed to the Squaw Patrol. They are wonderful and they save lives; they make Squaw as safe as it can be.

    That is definitely not true.

But I don't hold it against them now. They have a certain amount of manpower and they have many lives at stake including their own. At whatever pace they clear the mountain is OK with me.

Most of the Squaw patrollers are like 60.. Do they get nap time at noon?

both skiers had to to have their legs amputated. at least, that's what i think squaw's pr department really means when they say 'leg injuries'.
