    Slide in Marvin's

Ripped out on sab today after he hucked off the first cliff band, above the second band. Luckly, he didn't get carried. Maybe 14" crown, 60' wide, ran 120'+.

This was on our second lap and after skiing the safest line on the first run the snow seemed pretty stable, not to mention tracks in the area we skied on the second lap from earlier in the morning.

    either way, we = stupid

ill post up a pic in a bit...

    sketch.

    edit to add pic:

Anybody who skis out there a fair amount KNOWS you DON'T ski that area this time of year. It freezes and thaws every day the sun is out. (it faces south, duh) The ground there is sand (from the sandstone) and dirt, a perfect sliding surface. There are absolutely NO anchors, and it's just waiting for a trigger. This zone couldn't be more perfect for sliding. The only people skiing that are hucking. (perfect trigger)

When I was up there on Saturday skiing, I was impressed to see no tracks there. It seems the locals this year are fairly educated. Can't believe you guys skied that Phish.

I'm guessing a certain TR inspired you. Guess I should have responded in it stating the avy danger of the area those cliffs are in. Some individuals were drooling over them and had no idea either.

To put it in perspective, I've been skiing that area for 10 years and I've only found the conditions perfect enough to do that line ONCE...
Glad everyone is ok...hope your tracks don't inspire more to ski that.

Yeah, we stupidly saw others tracks from the morning and decided to go for it. That was our first mistake right there.

It's people like you that a lot of us don't disclose the areas that we ski....but I'm sure some dumbass here will give you directions so you can go and get yourself killed.

we were in that the area this morning around 10:30 and saw a couple tracks going off those same cliffs. We were surprised to see them there, but definitley makes it seem more accesible. Glad you guys are ok. Im sure we will see your work out there tommorow, should be interesting to see if anyone else still follows your tracks. anyone else going to be out tommorow?

There were no tracks there when we skied back there on sunday... there is a reason there were no tracks there. There are almost never tracks in that spot. We didn't even think about skiing there. It always slides and that is an area with consequences (rock grinders underneath that create the facet gardens and cliffs to be carried over (also facet)).

When Blurred showed me the area one of the first things he pointed out was that partiuclar area with an explanation on why never to ski it unless the conditions were *EXCEPTIONAL*

I've never skeid that. There hasn't even been a day where I've considered it (yet). I've seen other people hit it and trigger shit. For example these slides from March 1, 2004 after recent snow:

I'm glad you are OK. Be safe out there, buddy!

Thanks for the beta on the bed surface. Good to know, and a good reminder on why you should not ski terrain you haven't seen in the summer.

Likewise from above...approx 37 degrees. THE angle for most slides. Glad everyone is OK. EV is technically "side-country" but sketch nonetheless. Trees near there are more safe, but far from totally safe.

P.S. I am carless and very far from EV (where I'd like to be skiing). Looking for suitably equipped folks to get out near Steamboat for a ski tour.

    I'm suitably equipped...

I don't know Steamboat bc...do you? If you do, or if you figure it out a good tour or two in the next week, I could be game to make a trip up there...probably would want couch/floor space for one night.

Do our own TRs perpetuate dumb mistakes? (no offense Phish).

I've posted two threads recently because the more I'm in the BC and seeing the snow change (sometimes hourly) I realize how much more I need to know. The trip reports are really cool and all, but I think they lack a more professional character. Many of us here get out and ski amazing lines without incident. But, that doesn't mean that preparation wasn't taken, it just wasn't necessarily shared on the board. I can't blame us really. It isn't any more our jobs to educate Joe Midwest (no offense gang, I'm from Il.) on avalanche danger than it is for Terrell Owens to educate some kid. The difference is that we are all friends (for the most part) and we have the same love for skiing.

So, on that note, perhaps we should now start including some basic Avy observations with our TRs. I bet WE ALL could learn from that.

    Thoughts?

    Me likey.

Often, for me, it's just a matter of laziness, when it comes to typing up the TR. I tried to include more of that type of thing in my most recent The Trifecta TR Certainly, room for improvement there...
