I'm far too terrible a liar and honest to try and return stuff I haven't bought, and I have been treated very well returning stuff I bought there that prematurely destructed. I have hookups on about everything bike and ski related, but when it comes to camping stuff I feel good buying from REI, that is for sure.
However, I have some friends who are better liars. I've heard it referred to as

    R eturn
    E verything

I admit I didnt read this whole thread but I have one to add.

My buddy was hiking the PCT and stopped in Tahoe. He headed down to the REI in Reno. He came back with new Montrail running shoes (saying he had only had them 2 months).....and a new shell, saying the waterproofing wasnt up to par.

That is pretty horrible.....2 months of solid everyday use.....RETURNED.

    Here's the TR:

I didn't get second overall, I got second in the 5.9-5.10 division, which is basically beginner. I flashed 2 10s, 2 hard 9s, and had to count my warmup 8 because of time.

I really had a blast, the climbing has totally different feeling when you know you can't fall and you can't yell TAKE to rest. I thought 5 sends in 4 hours would be easy, but the time really flew by. There were lines of 5 people at most ropes, and if you fell you went to the back of the line.

The process was really slowed down by the shitload of inner-city kids who showed up in a church group. I feel kind of asshat-ish for saying it, but it's ridiculous when they take 10-15 minutes to struggle up a 5.6 when there are real climbers waiting for the rope and the attention of the judge. That aside, it was a really great experience.

They really went all-out with the door prizes, some people got TNF Denali jackets, a bunch of certificates for free climbing shoes, several backpacks, including one expensive-looking MHW one with a frame, dry bags, a sleeping bag, nikwax, etc, etc. Of course, I didn't win any of these, but w/e.

(And I got asked for change and met a mag! )
