Just moved to SD last summer and been lurking on this thread. Been traveling for skiing but gotta to get to the local hills at some point. Looks like big bear is closed for the weekend but snow summit is still open. Is it worth it? How’s parking/lines this time of year? Thinking of doing a surf and ski in the same day for my birthday this weekend
Edit: or is baldy a better move?

I went up to Summit last weekend. If you're just looking to blast groomers and hit small/medium jumps, its great for that. I got to the lot at 730 and had a primo parking spot, lift lines were basically non-existent all day. If you're looking for fun off-piste terrain, Baldy's a way better bet.
Snow summit is better piste skiing than big bear ,(they'll shuttle between the two), can be worth it for sure to get your fix for a couple of hours, but I haven't made it out there this season.
Baldy is better fall line and steeps and is also skiing well right now w good pack and warm temps, not what I would say good for kids/families, I think my kid at 7 is a year or two away from being able to deal there and have fun

Thanks for the info all. Baldy it is. Excited to do the California thing and ski and surf in the same day.
Says it’s going to be 70 degrees on Sunday. Is that real? Going to be complete sticky mush?

NOAA claiming 60 at 8500 ft in the San Gabes for Sunday. I just put spring wax on my skis on the chance I end up going to ski area. You might want to plan a sunset surf and ski earlier in the day...40 and clear overnight should firm things, but lots of sun this far south mid April. But not much flat on chair 3, I don't recall sticky snow being an issue and have skied there in May.
Planning Baden Saturday with a buddy.
Good call on the evening surf and I’ll make sure to hit chair 3. Thanks man

From today, starting to get some bumps down the gut of emilies

Baldy was fantastic today, great conditions everywhere and still a solid base. Only thing to add not in bry's photos is that the traverse out from South Bowl now has 2 dry stretches.
Today was classic spring slush at Baldy.
I got to the lot at 145, and did about ten laps on Thunder. Nice and slushy, but not too grabby. Herbs was fun, although getting interesting in spots, Emiles was great under the lift, and Emiles bowl was awesome.
The coverage is insane. I'll be back tomorrow afternoon

I got my Vans on but they look like sneakers.....

Ski and surf was a success. Baldy is an awesome little mountain. Entered in the little slalom race they had but there were some dads and older guys that probably swept the podium. I’m sure I looked sloppy out there. Made it back for a sunset surf. Was warmer on the mountain than in SD.

Hit Baldy again on Sunday. It was pretty similar to Saturday.
Nice and slushy, classic spring conditions. I found the Emile's area to be the best. Saturday I also got some nice lines down Herb's. It is pretty awesome to get to ski Herb's in late April.
We will see just how long the snow lasts. The snow in Emile's will be good for a couple of weeks. The question is whether they will be able to load the lifts.

I posted in tech talk but am gonna check here too. Anyone comfortable with binding insert installs that would be willing to help out?

Waterman for sale. Asking price seems high, but I bet they would take $1.5 million.

Man, that would be really cool. I Hope it lands in hood hands
Last weekend at Baldy was insane. Truly classic spring skiing.
Saturday was a bit cooler, a cloud layer, and there was even some slush crust in shadier spots, but for the most part it was fun, slushy and not grabby. I mostly skied the Emile's area, both under the lift and the bowl and trees. I also got into Goldridge, which was fun. Was on Thunder from around 2 pm to around 430.
Sunday was similar, but a bit sunnier, so softer. It still wasn't too grabby anywhere I went.
I avoided that Herb's/Andy's area, as it was pretty much melted out.
What a weekend, hopefully some of the rest of you guys got some.
There still should be some stuff to be had this weekend, although I would assume you would have to walk to the lifts.

Yes they are!
They're a bit beat up, but still fun. As the saying goes, there are rock skis, and there are baldy skis!
Over the years I have learned never to look at the bases during the day. You hit rocks at baldy, no point in checking bases until the end of the day! The damage has already been done.
Given the variety of snow baldy gets, and all the obstacles, I like a quick tuning ski which also has some beef underfoot.
How much snow did Baldy get this season?
141" per open snow
