    SPAM! buy from SlideWright

just got some stuff from SlideWright

I really like the Wood Ski Centering Tool & Calipers. Nice touch with the customization, Terry!

The Screw Install Kit is very nice. The drill bit and tap stops are indeed bomber. I dig the tap handle. I have two I bought at the hardware store and both of them have had the little spring in the T handle shit the bed, so this thing is way more better.

I like having a few of the quick set Hardman epoxy packs in the “oh shit kit” in my pack.

and yeah - order $50 worth of items before Jan 1 and I will give you a discount code for 40% off Mammut

    Really? Are you a troll?

If not, the way I understand it, a business has a better shot at remaining afloat and possibly turning a profit if they do not give away there ideas, proprietary property and products.

That said, there is nothing I can do if some steals my ideas and uses them.

No, I buy your products. Sorry to offend. I was thinking more for tinkering purposes. There are lots of open source hardware products that do very well around a community people who like to modify and such.

Interesting. My impression of the open source community is the expectation that the content should be free to those who choose to participate. How can anyone profit in that environment?

I'm trying make tool improvements and resources for those who like to tinker/take care of their expensive gear to save money and increase it's performance, usability and life expectancy.

It's still quite an effort to actually make something physical, so I think with most of the OSHW things I'm familiar with, pretty much everyone using a product has bought one. Then when they want to modify or incorporate stuff into their own designs they produce their own. I guess most of this stuff is electronics, which is more expensive to produce at home than printed plastic parts. So I guess that might not be entriely relevant. But Prusa publishes design files for the printable parts for their printers, while also selling the physical parts.

It's also possible to sell the design files, but I don't know who does that. Anyway, I was just curious about it. Not demanding that you release designs or anything.

    Here are some examples:

    110% buying one of these,

Did two freehand mounts this week and the ski centering tool is still the best investment I've made in the process of mounting skis. Thanks Terry!

    Good to hear.

You can hold the sharpener in your palm and either push or pull the scraper, plus put the scraper in a vise to sharpen. The file can be moved and flipped to use all of the teeth vs just wearing out one section only in other sharpeners.

Also, by adjusting to a thin scraper, you can file a metal scraper to clean it up and straighten. Ideally, I’d like to figure out how to burnish the edge for 15 degree or so hook for ultra sharp base repair material removal.

Ok, after purchasing a few skis and bindings this season, I feel like I should maybe mount my own damn skis rather than pay a shop for all of the mounts. That being said, I have only done basic waxing/tuning to skis, so where is the best place to start? Is there a package from SlideWright that has most everything I need to mount bindings? It will primarily be alpine (Looks) and tech bindings (ATK/Dynafit/etc.). I looked and thought these products looked the most promising:

SlideWright Alpine, Telemark, XC Binding Screw Installation KIt
    SlideWright Binding Layout Tools
    Ski Vise

I imagine this has been asked before - I found Alpinord's help thread from 10 years so but didn't find the answer - so feel free to direct me if there is a good video, kit, blog post, etc. to consult for 1) what to buy and 2) how to do it. TIA.

IMO, a good start is a 3.6 & 4.1 stepped drill bit. (Sure, you can use a stop, but the stepped drill keeps you from drilling through the bottom of your skis, if you screw things up. And yes, I used to use the cork method too, but still like a stepped bit better.)
The 12AB tap is also pretty nice to have.
Glue. Wood glue works, but epoxy is mo-bettah. IMO.

    That's really all you need.
Freehand drill your holes - just try to keep them plumb - it's always been easy and good-enough for me.
And using the tap with your drill clutch set low is handy too.
(Yes, I do run with scissors. Why do you ask?)

My go to answer is check out our tuning tips and realized the links in the were outdated in that thread. I updated them:

Just wrapped up a series of Binding posts in our Tuning Tips section:

    https://www.slidewright.com/category...ski-snowboard/

I’d add the centerline tool with included Boot Sole Length gauge to your list. https://www.slidewright.com/products...es-and-Clamps/

Definitely get a good bench and shop set up with a vise. https://www.slidewright.com/ski-and-...owboard-vises/

We’ve added other installation tools on top of the Binding Layout tools.

    For the fool.
Read up and practice on tech bindings. It’s critical to line up the heel pins.
Most set the heel and only drill one toe screw. Mount the toe binding and boot and line it up. Then mark the other three screws.

    Alpine bindings are way easier.

ATK binding templates are based on mounting the toe first. Lou Dawson suggested this eons ago. I think this is a good approach to all bindings.

As a recent update to the binding layout tool, I’ve added clips that lock the toe and heel pieces relative to your boot sole length. Plus they are useful for comparing binding hole layouts for multiple bindings:

There's a bunch more on the SlideWright Binding Mount Tool/Jig in this thread: Minimum & Maximum Boot Sole Lengths

Performing practice mounts and understanding the adjustment range of your bindings with the boot locked in is highly recommended. I’ve been thinking that mounting the toes and heels on separate ‘practice blocks’ (or cut your practice board) might be worth considering. After drilling and mounting, you can clamp them at different locations within the adjustment range of the bindings to help decide your final positions before drilling your skis.

Here’s a rough and dirty video on the steps for a practice mount:

Hey Alpinord, I saw you have the mount tool for a warden 13 and warden 11 demo, but not a warden 13 demo. Any plans for one of those?

I’m currently in the middle of an overdue site overhaul. This will surely muck up links posted in TGR. It’d be a huge task fixing broken links and I will putz around with fixing them. But all broken links will not be corrected. If you find some from my past posts, please let me know.

If you land on an unavailable page, the quickest ways to find what you are looking for is to click on the ‘Categories’ menu and drill down to the sub-categories. Or simply perform a search at the upper right for products. I think the tuning tips links should be ok. We’ll see.
