Take it easy on the fun and relaxing Lower Loop trail. Conveniently located near the town of Crested Butte, the Lower Loop trail offers mellow terrain for anyone looking to explore. The views are astounding as you come across Peanut Lake with beautiful Paradise Divide and Mt. Crested Butte standing tall just in front of you. Grab a seat and relax on one of the many benches along the trail while your feet bask in the array of colorful wildflowers. The Lower Loop trail is the ideal hike for the whole family. Run, walk, hike, and bike on this easy-going fun and exciting trail.
Hike Time: 3.5 Hours (round-trip)
Difficulty: Easy
From town of Crested Butte head west on Elk Avenue before taking a right on to 1st street. Continue straight until you reach Butte Ave. From Butte Ave, take a left and continue straight for a little over a tenth of a mile before reaching the designated parking location (Note: Butte Avenue becomes Peanut Lake Road once you hit the dirt road).
From the designated parking location, stretch, hydrate and get ready for a fun and beautiful hike. Hike, bike, run or walk roughly a mile on Peanut Lake Road before you reach the Lower Loop trailhead. Do not forget to make a pit stop at Peanut Lake and grab a seat on the wooden bench while you take in the euphoric views of Mt. Crested Butte, Paradise Divide and Gothic Mountain!
At the end of Peanut Lake Road you will come across the Lower Loop trailhead sign. Look around and gaze upon the colorful wildflowers blooming under your feet. They will captivate your eyes and you will be amazed at the different shapes, sizes, and colors.
It is time to begin your adventure as you cruise through the Lower Loop trail. Bikers, hikers, runners and walkers of all ages will be having fun alongside you. The Lower Loop trail is approximately 6.5 miles and will take 3.5 hours to complete. Make sure you are hydrated before embarking on the adventure. We recommend carrying a small backpack with some snacks to keep your energy level up.
