For some of us, the thought of taking a holiday filled with lying about on the sand all day every day just doesn’t seem to fill us with quite as much joy as others. Some of us want to get up and do things, spend our time and our money exploring the world, seeking out our next adventure or adrenaline rush. For those of us that love adventures, we might not always know where to go, but we’ve made a list of some of the best countries to visit for an adventure holiday. So grab your passports, work out whether you need an e111 visa, and get to adventuring!
Djibouti
If you’re looking for a destination filled with unusual landscapes and nomadic tribes, Djibouti could be the choice for you. Located on the Horn of Africa, this country is bordered by Ethiopia and Somalia, and rarely appears on any tourist radars. Its landscape is not unlike something you’d expect to see on the moon that has been sculpted by volcanic activity and wind erosion, and with salt lakes and tribes still roaming the land, it makes the perfect location for an adventure holiday. Kayaking, hiking and snorkelling are all possibilities, or relax in Djibouti City, a lively port town that was once nothing more than a sleep French outpost.
Iraqi Kurdistan
Kurdistan is home to Iraq’s first national park which is home to Halgurd Mountain, dramatic waterfalls and plenty of rare species such as lynx, leopards and brown bears. A trip here can be tough, but plenty rewarding but make sure you pay attention to FCO advice before you go. With the heightened tensions in Iraq, Kurdistan is currently listed as being somewhere to visit only for essential travel, but this can be quick to change. Why it’s not advisable to take risks such as this, keep an eye on the FCO website and make sure to take out comprehensive travel and health insurance before you go.
Fiji
Since the restoration of the democracy, Fiji is far more of an attractive travel option than ever before. The nation is made up of 332 islands, which is a dream for those who want to go on a Kayaking holiday. If you can, bring your own folding Kayak, or be prepared to pay the costs to hire out a Kayak per day or only participate in guided tours. The calmest seas are on the north-west side of the island, so stick here if you are not a confident kayaker, and try and avoid cyclone season. Otherwise, Fiji is a stunning option for a visit, and is well worth the trip.
Jordan
Jordan is a gorgeous country well worth a visit for the views alone. The country plays host to the Dead Sea, as well as the perfectly preserved heritage that Jordan is known so widely for. The rock-hewn Petra is something to go on the bucket list, and with plenty of crusader castles and roman ruins around the country, there is certainly no shortage of culture to enjoy and appreciate. With desert experiences, floating on the Dead Sea and snorkelling among the coral reefs in the Red Sea, there is a little something for everyone.
