I had to pay $35 extra one time because my kid brought her 3.5# school book with her to Hokkaido. I just sighed. (I mean, we were going to Hokkaido and the kid brought her schoolwork.)
I’ve found I can pack my 32L pack with my ski boots and most of a day’s worth of ski clothes (wear some, too) right at 8 kg.

I’ve flown recently with Air France, KLM and SAS and don’t remember any carryons being weighed.

Carry on weighing is still infrequent for major carriers and seems to only be tied to flights where they know their cargo+fuel+cargo+passenger weight sum it pushing it. Originally Posted by zion zig zag

We went to texass for the eclipse, then London and Paris for most of April with (international size) carry-on only and did great. This was our second carry-on only trip across the pond. We had to do some laundry at the AirBnB's, and bought a few toiletries, but it was easy breezy. Our first trip over with carry-on only we bought more clothes and checked a cheap duffle on the way back with stuff we didn't care about losing. Originally Posted by Danno

Yes, it was so much cheaper it was worth the drive for me. My recollection is direct flights to London on British from Seattle were around $1500, but more like $1000 from YVR (of course YMMV, this was in the summer when fares were high). Also the YVR flight goes to Gatwick rather than Heathrow, but that probably doesn't make a huge difference in most cases. We were able to select seats (that's a upcharge on British--if you don't pay you can only select seats at check-in time) and still save money. Also the value long term parking lot for YVR is pretty cheap if you pay in advance. It's right on the SkyTrain line, just a couple minutes from the airport and I paid just over $100 US for two weeks of parking. Originally Posted by Dromond

I can see this happening. Every time I fly there’s a new charge or regulation somewhere. My previous mentioned trip through Schiphol to Nairobi and back, nobody even looked at our roller carry-ons, (Delta, KLM). On the KLM to Nairobi segment there was one dude ramming a lot of the carry-ons into the tubular size limiter thing. We noticed him after we were through, and he was operating the other line. Flying Air Baltic on a few legs soon. They allow your carryon and personal item to weigh up to 17lbs.
You can pay extra for that that to be bumped up to 26.5lbs.
Soon we will have surge pricing on carry-ons.

Rollers with tuck-away or zip-away pack straps!
They are clutch for places (like Europe) where the wheels only get you part of the way!
Why are these so hard to find these days?
The High Sierras I have are both needing replacement.
Carryon roller: 22" expandable split roller bag with a hard bottom that fits in the overhead bins but can expand a good chunk for checked use. Bent the telescoping handle so it only comes out halfway.
Big roller: 35" 110L drop bottom duffel roller with 34" of internal length, pretty sleek at 14"x14" which keeps it balanced and the drop bottom is hard sided. It sits happily upright on the wheel end. The zippers are going making it sketchy to travel with.
They both have rigid base and back, the rest is padded or soft. I hate rollers with a soft back as they sag putting the weight on your arm instead of the weels. The zipaway pack straps on the hard-side gives you a frame and carries nicely when your room is down the snow covered alley and up 5 flights!
I absolutely cannot find a 30+" 110-130L roller duffel with one hard side and pack straps on the hard side. High Sierra doesn't do backpack straps anymore. The closest thing I've found is the Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler XT series. Straps are on the soft side of the bag, which I can tolerate, but the largest size is only 32" which makes it fatter (bukly/tippy)... guess that is OK since ate least it claims 120L as long as there is at least 29"n of internal length.
