Yeah, that is a tough one.

Was just speaking with an acquaintance who is starting to ride on the road and he mentioned if there was a need for lights. I was adamant about the need for them day and night. Why not? It may not save you, but it cannot hurt.

Having your life threatened multiple times per day by motorists too impatient to take a few seconds to slow down and be courteous gets pretty old.

Insistent road bikers live for it, else they wouldn't make a point of riding on 65mph roads, demanding that trucks slow down and express courtesy.

I would hope so. Driver gonna be in deep shit.

Guessing the victim and videographer were riding two abreast, which is legal in OR so long as they aren’t impeding traffic. There was plenty of room and sight line to pass regardless of double yellow, like the pickup did.

Comments in the thread indicate it happened in Tennessee and driver went to jail. Despite driving a Volvo. I thought they were safe cars

^^^Yup just scrolled down far enough to find this
Marshall Grant Neely is scheduled to appear in court on July 20th on the following charges:

    Reckless endangerment
Leaving the scene of an accident
Failure to immediately notify an accident
    Failure to render aid
In the Tennessee drivers have a legal responsibility to:

Pass cyclists with at least three feet or face prosecution
Drive with due care or face prosecution
In Tennessee Cyclists are legally allowed to:

Ride two abreast on Natchez Trace (as per state park signs)
Ride in the middle of the road where the road is narrow (to stop vehicles overtaking for safety reasons)
    And from here
    https://www.natcheztracetravel.com/b...0-reasons.html

The park service has "bike route" signs posted at regular intervals along the entire length of the parkway. These signs encourage motorists to "share the road" with cyclists.

ETA- a search for Marshall Grant Neely shows this happened five years ago, and the guy appears to have an issue with alcohol.

I'm pretty sure that was posted in this thread 5 years ago.

But at the end of the day, is slowing down 10mph and moving over a bit that big of a deal? I glad I live rural and only need to commute short distances of pavement to get to dirt. Many don't have that option.

I was one of those asshole cyclists yesterday. I got caught on an intersection where site line to the traffic signal is temporarily blocked by an overhead train track.
I saw green before the signal is blocked from view following behind cars. But when cleared under the track, the light was red and I was heading into cross traffic. I slowed as much as possible but could not avoid getting hit. [emoji21]
No damage to vehicle, but bike and body messed up.

The train track isn’t temporary. It over the road before the intersection and temporarily blocks site lines to the traffic lights.
There’s a downhill before the intersection. I could see the green light from up the hill over tracks. But when I went under the tracks I lost site of the lights until I was practically at the intersection at which point it had just turned red and I was going about 40mph.

Bold move heading into that blind spot at 40mph. I hope you're not too banged up and feeling it a day later... post up pictures of mangled bike/body if your up to it.

Do you mtn bike at all? If so, how much do you think your bike handleing skills helped slow/control your crash?

It's not a big deal, but highangle once saw a family towing a kid trailer on a busy road in AK when there was an adjacent shared use path he is still pretty riled up about.

I live in a urban area with bike lanes, marked cross walks, flashy lights, the works. Can't even get drivers to move their feet 4 inches to slow down/speed up when I'm with my kids in a marked cross walk.

Probably more stupid than bold. I should have anticipated light change.
I don’t consider my mountain bike skill that impressive. But have pretty good skills on the road bike.
After micro second evaluation of potential options I realized I could not clear the intersection and there was no bailout. I was going to hit a car. The choice was which one and how. My best chance for survival was to turn into the direction of traffic, lock the rear wheel, and slide sideways into the side of a van.
My shoulder, ribs, and hip took took the impact. I stood up off the road right away and did a fast body evaluation. No road rash or broken bones. Shoulder hurt, but had mobility. I grabbed my bike and got out of the way.
I haven’t looked at the bike in detail, but superficially you would not tell there’s much wrong. seat and handlebars got cut. Wheels appear to be slightly bent. Top tube has a dent from the handlebars. I need to see if the frame is bent and any pedal or drivetrain issues. Probably need need new tires.

I would suggest that doesn't make you an asshole cyclist.... glad you're basically OK.

I frequently drive a busy two lane road on the north end of Lake Union. There is a large, smooth, gorgeous bike trail (Burke-Gilman) right next to this road. To me, the asshole cyclists (usually in spandex and faux-team gear) are the ones who constantly insist on riding ON the road instead of the path.

Usually it's too busy to pass them with any safety so I just follow at a safe distance (being followed on a bike by a car is uncomfortable to me) at low speed until they move or it's safe to pass which can be a long time, but it pisses me off. Use the fucking path they built FOR YOU FFS!

I can't figure out why they ride the road instead of the path. Maybe the path is too crowded, but so is the road? WTF?

I want to ride on the bike path. But there is road construction that has a section torn up and this intersection is the detour routed about a mile away. It's the only option. The intersection was never designed or modified to be biker or pedestrian friendly.

    Fu*king Cyclists

Just know…you can’t park in the bike lane. FU Amazon, cops, postal workers or random dudes who do. I’ll get my boy from the Twin Cities on your ass.
