Looks like Red Creek was still contributing a bit. Those three sites at Beaver Dam are my most productive firewood scrounging sites…

Yeah, we took a similar approach. Cut the articulated connection off first to avoid having another hook around. Luckily he hooked himself vs a buddy doing it for him.

Wow, after an extravaganza like that I am humbled to offer my understated birthday fishing foray to my favorite fishing hole, which yielded a couple nice fish even a story which will follow
I caught the first fish on a double dry set up with size 20 trico trailing 16" behind a size 12 irresistible. The irresistible got hit first, and I used my trademark move of ripping it outta the trout's mouth ( I have skills that way) in a panic to set the hook. After landing the fish, I found little further interest in the rig, and started shuffling through various patterns that seemed likely. Eventually, I landed a second one that took one of the Sierra bright dots (red) my dad sent me for my birthday.
I went back, as the dusk was gathering, to the same double dry rig, and got a take quickly, when I set the hook I felt a couple strong shakes before my irresistible came back sans trico, the line (5x tippets) had broken. I put a olive caddis in the trico's place, and threw it for a while, but after a horrid tangle, which lost me about twenty minutes out of the last half hour, I was ready to call it. On my last cast I let it drift down the pool, away from the hot spot, a something took it as it sunk, and when I set the hook nothing came back but my leader. I like to think those break-offs were bigger fish than I've caught there yet.Last edited by Rasputin; 09-28-2022 at 06:44 PM.

I find it interesting how species vary in coloring based, in part, on the light intensity where they spend their time. I caught a cutthroat in the Bitterroot on Monday, at the end of a wide sunny riffle, and it was kind of golden with pink gill plates and slashes, whereas the ones I have taken from the deep pool I like, have deep olive backs, and look almost like they are bleeding:

2022 SHITTY FISHING PICTURES AND TALL TALES OF THINGS THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN
Your bday today? If so, happy birthday. Mine too.
Took the liberty of such and went behind the shop for an extended lunch break.
Ants, motherfuckers. Ants.
Suffice to say, the river under one of the Twin Bridges is fishing well.
Returned to the shop, rolled a fuck ton of rods, and finally got off a few hours behind schedule.
Headed to the slough and got after it.
It has been a good day.

It helps that the two fisheries I frequent are basically comprised of 99% browns. I’ve only caught one rainbow in the last month of fishing the Beav basically every day.
But if you wanna catch a brown, specially a big one, the hours before and after sunset are your best bet. Dark colored hopper or beetle is my go to. Don’t be afraid to go bigger, but be sure the profile is accurate.
Dark streamer swung along undercut banks also works well. Marabou and the like are your friend. Articulation doesn’t hurt.
Hour before sunrise with a big ole mouse pattern can also be incredibly productive. Accurate casts across stream to primary feeding lies. Long strips to start, adjust accordingly.
Or come down and fish these waters for a day or two.

Fall musky hunting with non-mag Nick, who guided Underoos a few days ago.
Saw multiple sturgeon and several muskys, but could not get the Muskys to play ball. Beautiful day to be on the river.

Been meaning to put this up for a few weeks now, finally caught up at work enough to spend a few minutes.
Escaped to the Great White North with the usual gang for a week of shenanigans.

What is the group's consensus on a 10' dry fly rod?
Found a great deal on a 4wt Winston Pure in 10' length and I am sorely tempted.

My opinion don't mean shit but I like my 3 and 4wts shorter since I'm typically fishing them on small creeks that have tight bushes etc. If its gonna be strictly a dry fly rig for the boat than no problem. I've been fishing my 8'6" 4wt a lot lately since I have like 10 rods that all need repairs. Also N+1 or some shit..

Yeah that makes sense
I was casting SFB's beautiful Winston all day on Sunday and I definitely see the appeal of "nice" rods (my daily driver 4wt being a TFO blue ribbon) - but if I'm going to drop $400+ on a rod I want it to be useful. 10' is just too long for the majority of the cases where I am fishing.

Reel arrived today. She's a beauty. Wifey wants me to place it under the tree. Now, all I need is to gain some FF skills.
I would love to do a fishing version of BBI at Henry's Fork in early June. If people are interested, I will make arrangements to rent a cabin and put the trip together. Who's interested???

I think the perfect western fly rod is a 9 foot 5 weight, until of course you start adding to the quiver - I am pretty sure I am over 20 rods, and that’s just my fresh water rods…
Edited to add, I am in Swan Valley all summer, so if you put together a day on the Hank I am in. I am sure birdcunter will chime in shortly telling us all how we are not cool enough to fish there, blah blah blah….

It’s all very subjective, but a 10ft slower action 4wt doesn’t really appeal to me. I think it could feel whippy and harder to control the tip and loop, with minimal gains for the added reach. A 10ft 4wt euro rig has its place but that’s not really my jam. I do have some friends who fish a lot of still water that like the 10ft casting rods.
The high end rods are really fucking nice. Needed…No. but man they are fun to cast. It’s hard to go back to the low and mid levels of the quiver once you add a couple nice ones. Go cast it if you can.
I’ve been absolutely blown away with the 9ft 5wt Scott centric. For me this is the perfect western trout rod. Fast action but so much more feel and control then my others. Really thinking about adding the 6 or the 4.

Long ago I had a Loomis 10 foot 4 weight that was designed for high stick nymphing.
Of course that’s called Euro nymphing now. It was just ok as a dry fly rod. I liked it if I was fishing a small creek that just had high grass, (think Flat Creek in Wyoming), and it was easier to do the cast over the grass. Otherwise…When it broke I got a 9 x 4, and my favorite 3 is an 8’.Well maybe I'm the faggot America
