There is a "No camping" sign that I had never noticed before at the entrance to the devastated area parking lot. My experience at Lassen NP parking lots has been the Rangers are not out early. I have always slept in my car with nothing left outside and been hiking before seeing them. It used to be $10 entry until the road was open all the way but Saturday was $30. We parked extra cars outside the park and carpooled. Saturday the snow above treeline looked a little dimpled but skied very smooth. We took two runs below the middle rock buttress. The approach is still a pretty short hike to easy skinning on suncups.

Shasta is skiing as good as it gets. Snowpack is unreal, and we got a nice solid freeze to below Bunny on Sunday. Get some!

Can agree that shasta is primo right now. Avoid AG, two CHP Astar rescues in two days this weekend. Evidently someone tomahawked 2k from the thumb sunday morning and had severe head trauma. It was generally a cluster, so many morons up there in these nice weather windows.
Props to the CHP pilots - watching them do a hoist at 11500 was impressive.
Anyways it looked like hotlum wintun was totally untracked, trailhead is still snowed in for a couple miles.

Hotlum/Bolum out of North Gate was good on Tuesday.
Really good!
One hour hike to skinnable snow. The suncups were only in the flats heading around the corner to the H/B route.
Skied down from 11,000' at 10am.
Perfect corn window for that time/elevation.

We headed skiers left before that second drop to grab more turns.
You gotta hit that bowl - it was really good!
Prime time corn right now!

Whitney was cruiser. All snowbridges were still covered with winter snowpack, but the big one/two at the top were starting to open. It looked like at least 2-4 weeks before things would start to open up. Lotsa rockfall coming down Shastina though so head's up - it's a real shooting gallery down there.
sproing!

Your pic of the Whitney north face head wall in the background looks sick. Did it look as appealing closer up on your out?

Yeah man, we were ogling that thing hard. We couldn't believe it, but there was a chute that went all the way through, except for a chockstone about 150 (??) feet down. Hard to judge relative scale, so not sure how big or nasty it was. I did not take any good pics, but you can see the chute between the guys on the skyline in this shot:
Exit onto the upper glacier looked fine too. But yeah, Shasta is soooooo stacked. I doubt that line comes into condition often. There was still six feet of pack behind the Bunny Flat sign in the lot. Crazy.sproing!

Gimpy, if you're taking about skiing off of the West sumit of shasta down to the Whitney glacier (or more likely from the summit plateau down to the whitney) - which is what i think you see in the background, then i don't think that route is that steep. you can look at the topo. Fallen Angel (shastina direct to the whitney glacier, which is what i think Meterman skiied) is steeper, as are the Thumbs down chutes. ps. i might be heading up that way this weekend or next, if anyone is looking for partners.

I know Clear Creek isn’t usually the first ski descent of choice on Shasta but I was solo this week and wanted an easy climb.
Started out Thursday morning about 1.3 road miles (5,800 elev) below the trail head due to a big downed tree which has since been removed. One can now get to about .9 miles of the trail head with more snow melting each day.
Took it mellow walking up the road dodge snow patches until I finally put on my skis and started skinning at 6,400. Coincidentally it was just below the true trail head. From there it was easy skinning on soft snow up the ridge overlooking Mud Creek Canyon. A few bare patches to dodge and some sizable suncups but the softness made it a fun skin.
The falls looked great across the way and the ridge is loaded with snow. Couldn’t tell if that was normal or what but either way I eventually got up to tree line around 8,200 and found a bare spot under a few trees to set up camp.
Slept great that night, too great, and got off to a real late start the next day. Luckily the boot up was 75/25 beautiful/too soft. I made up some good time and managed to hit mushroom rock (12,800?) at 2:30. It was mostly dry booting to the summit plateau from there so I opted for the full descent due to it being late.
Again I would say I got lucky and I ended up with pretty spectacular snow from mushroom rock all the way down to about 8,500 before it got a little sticky. Skiing on the upper mountain was soft yet fast and so much fun. Not a very steep route but it’s really fun to just open up and haul ass down.
Made the quick transition back up to camp and spent one more night up there before packing it up and skiing back down early this morning. Skiing down from camp wasn’t terrible. Somewhat odd with the suncups but the eastern side of the ridge was pretty smooth and fun to surf down.
All in all I would definitely try that route again in a good year like this. Still has a few more weeks of good smooth snow on the upper mountain but definitely getting cooked fast.
Ready to get back up there next week!

Nice! It's been a few years since I've been on that route. Thanx for the pics! Love that view into Mud Creek Canyon with the waterfall.
I'll never forget dropping 'shrooms and getting the Campylobacter food poisoning symptoms from an earlier meal
just as the 'shrooms hit while on one of my month long trips up at that trailhead back in the '90's...
Had to drive all the way back to Shasta to get to the emergency room.
Wow!
Fun times!
Looks like I'll be back in the North Gate area on Mon/Tue. Can't wait!
Hoping for the Inconstance Creek TH.
Still gotta wait for the Gravel Creek TH to open up...
Thanx for the TR.

A couple friends and I skied the hotlum wintun route yesterday. Parking is still a little ways out (the trailhead proper is covered in two to three feet of snow still!) but the skiing is prime.
We parked at about 6300’ (could’ve gotten a little bit closer actually) and put skins on at 6900’, which was around an hour’s walk for us. The suncups on the flats are a bit larger than I expected, worse than when I last skied the HW in early July 2017. Not too bad yet though.
I stopped at 11,500’ and took a long siesta before skiing perfect corn at 10am. (The spring of feeling tired and out of shape continues.) Friends skied from the summit and 13,200’ respectively —both at noon — and said the snow was perfect from the very top and still good down lower. Great skiing for the three of us at our respective times down to about 9000’, at which point it was unpleasantly sticky and a matter of making hop turns through slushy suncups to get to our shoes. Tiring but fine. I think we were one of just three parties trying to summit on that side that day, though a bunch more people walked in to camp later that afternoon.
I’d definitely recommend skiing it now and not waiting for the trailhead to open. The extra walk is minimal effort.
For reference, highs and lows at the summit were forecast around 32 and winds were minimal. Highs felt like low 70s at the car and maybe high 40s at 3am.
We’re hoping to head back to the north side in mid-July if the skiing still sounds half decent at that point.
Oh, we also discovered that the mt Shasta market does Santa Maria-style barbecue Fridays and Saturdays with tri-tip, steaks, chickens and ribs. Delicious and inexpensive! The locals don’t seem overly enthused by a couple dirty guys woofing down grilled meat in the market’s parking lot though
There’s also a great taco truck in Corning on the way up the 5, so the eating portion of the trip far exceeded expectations. Wish I could’ve stayed longer than 24 hours.

My daughter and I skied Lassen yesterday. Some texture on the lower angle flats area but fairy minimal and soft/easy to push around. The face itself was absolutely glorious rip roaring corn from the summit all the way to the flats. About 30-40 mins to snow. Let me know if you find my shoe up there. Biner clip fail!

Gimpy - correct. Angels wings(my memory sux now . Yeah, i see your point about doing a route that usually doesn't come into shape. this is one of the years to do it. let us know how it goes.
B. Gillis - cool TR and pics!
Jorion - Thanks for the Hotlum/wintoon Beta! yeah, we were there yesterday as well and did stuff from the south side. it only froze from about 9500 and above and starting to get suncups below 9000 or so. We had great corn at 9~am from 12.7 on an easterly (2-3 inches of corn, would have been bad had we skiied it at 10 or later), then great corn (1 inch really smooth) from 11 down to 9500 or so on a more W aspect. Total mush below that. Still pretty much ski/skin to bunny with a tiny bit of on/off. such warm temps, a pretty early start is key...
AKBruin - bummer that we didn't catch up for a beer. Same to you JimW (hope ya have a great day today).
Chill - great shot on Lassen w/shasta in the back (classic!). I'm envious of you/AK taking the kids out to the backcountry on fathers's day. Hopefully in a couple of years i'll have mine doing the same

Sweet, Chill Winston!
Mr. Hankey, sorry I missed you in the parking lot. I would have really enjoyed a beer. Also, I hope you do a TR on your impressive fix of Markham's binding!
Anyhow, as alluded above, I took my 12-year-old to Shasta this weekend. Here are my crappy iPhone photos.
We parked about a quarter mile downhill from the trailhead because we wanted more vert (and because the parking lot was a junkshow).
To my her credit, she did the whole thing in alpine boots and frame bindings because her feet are too small for tech boots.
Thankfully, some cloud cover rolled in Saturday afternoon but never actually produced any rain or lightning on the mountain. Before that, it was pretty sweaty.
Here's my super secret camp spot on the mountain. Don't tell anybody!
I kept hearing mountaineers and skiers talking about ridiculously early starts. Against my better judgment, I decided to be conservative and leave camp at 5:30 a.m. with the goal of summitting around 11 a.m. In retrospect, we could have gotten another hour of sleep and had more than enough time.
Taking ample breaks, we made it to the summit around 10 a.m. though. We chilled above Misery Hill for an hour so waiting for the snow to soften below red banks.
We dropped just after 11, but I think noon would have been a better drop time.
Still, below Red Banks, the snow was pretty good.
This panel was particularly nice, delivering about 1,500' of near perfect corn. After packing up, we descended from Helen Lake around 12-ish. The snow below was heavy but fun until it was just heavy and wet.
