Met a older gentleman at the local ski area, his name was Otto or Fritz, from Austria. He was a member of the original 10th Mtn. I recall at the time he was 81, this was at least 6 years ago. He had a superb technique.

Edit to add I have met many X-country skiers who were in their 60's and 70's.

Rode the Strawberry gondi @ Snowbasin with a 80 year old man and his late 50's daughter. Thought if I was still doing (or trying) at 60, it would be a "win", let alone 80.

Had a guy in his 70's learning how to snowboard. He took a lesson and then was out every day for a week. I guess its never too late to learn.

We have several members of our ski club that are in there 80's & still ski. I skied with Bob this week who is 84 years young & a member of the 80+ club. Fred who is 86 skis more than I do with about 50 days a year. Pop who is 94 now only stopped skiing 2 years ago because his daughter won't let him anymore. My father is 82 & still skis.

Now if you want to talk 70+ I know to many to count who still ski. I hope I still can ski & enjoy it when I reach that age.

Anyone ever meet Herman 'Jackrabbit' Smith-Johannsen? I'm afraid I never met the guy, though I do remember seeing him on tv when I was a kid. He was a Norwegian-Canadian skiing legend from the Montreal area who died in 1987, shortly before his 112th birthday. Apparently he skied until he was 107, although was a nordic guy and would never ride the lifts (I guess he was an all-arounder before there were lifts, one of the original Telemark crew in the late 1800's). Quite a story:

I was riding chair 2 at Mammoth a couple of years ago with an older gentleman who was riding a hardboot set up on a snowboard. We started chatting a bit and it turns out he was 86...learned to snowboard at 79...unbelievable!

last weekend rode the lift with a man who's been skiing for 74 years and is 79. he used to run a cat ski op around here. I was saying how I've been enjoying the groomers and bumps since it hadn't been snowing and he's like, yeah I try to avoid them, I prefer fresh snow all the time.

Saw Tom Jacobs at West Mountain this past weekend. He was out all day, and the dude can make some damn nice turns. He's ~85 now. He said he's got about 40+ days of skiing in this year so far.

Yule Kilcher...Homer, Alaska. He was the singer Jewel's grandfather, and she was sorta named after him. Anyway, Yule lived to 94 or something, but he was still nordic skiing and skinning OLD pre-AT equipment until he was 88 or so. The guy was a legend around Southcentral Ak...and a hell of a fine fellow.

Maybe not the oldest skier but back on MLK day I rode up the lift at Snowbird with a guy who was 80. He has a pass to Snowbird and Solitude. He said he puts in 110-120 days a year. He said his wife isn't quite as into skiing as he is and only skis about 90 days a year. DANG!

Was at the Hidden Lake Lodge at Pow Mow last Saturday. Older guy was having trouble finding a place to sit so I offered him my seat and hung his jacket up on the wall hooks. I looked at his patch and saw he was in the 90+ club. When i asked him how old he said 91 and he visited Utah for 6 weeks each winter. He was with a his younger "companion" who looked to be in her 70's and told me he was done for the day. He was tired from the 14+ inches and the fact that he decided to demo rockered powder skis. I had to laugh that a 91 was still interested in trying the newest stuff. i shook his hand and said thanks.

Col. Cliff "Angel" Farfel was the the guy that started our shop at Purg; had to stop skiing a couple of years ago, but he skied till he was damn near 90. He was the guy that always dressed up as Santa at the the hill on Christmas, and skied around shit-faced drunk and stinking of whiskey, giving out candy to the kids.

And Bob Beers was well into his 80's when he finally gave up teaching skiing. He was getting out there more than most people, with an oxygen tank, and getting paid to do it. Always admired him.
