Maybe some of this may help you come to your decision. When we wanted another dog we wanted a rescue or pound dog that would be good for trail running, mountain biking, fly fishing and BC/skate skiing, etc. We wanted a small, light colored, shorter fur dog. Small, because the 70-90 pound dogs we had were a pain in the car, a pain for one of my friends to pack out of the BC when it got injured, larger piles of crap to clean up, etc. A light color because the dark ones all got hot quicker, and we wanted shorter, (not too short or it wouldn't work for skiing), fur since the Labs we had seemed to dry a lot quicker after swims. Nothing like a smelly wet retriever on your lap.

We took our time and visited many shelters, pounds, whatevers. We ended up with a heeler because it met most of those criteria. There were other mixed breed dingo looking dogs we almost got that would probably have been fine. The shiba inu may have worked also, but there weren't any. We also wanted a greyhound, but they can't do any of the things we do.

All dogs have some issue. I frankly like the fact our heeler wants to nip you if she doesn't know you.

We got a resue dog off reserve. So very removed from purbreed status. Loves cold, will break through thin ice to lay in water when its below freezing out.

I love these dogs, they are awesome.

Chesapeakes are pretty great for outdoor living, too, but need a lot of exercise and are sometimes a little snappy.

GSD get from a reputable dealer or get a mix from the pound but great dogs, can handle snow and hikes of decent length pretty well. Trains to be a great dog and are very loving and loyal. Only downside is big dogs-bigger shits.

I ride 10-20 miles every day with my Vizsla. He's great dog, only way he could better would be if he could work on my bike.

another vote for shepherds. they can ski and bike like champs.
Get a pound dog, but spend at least an hour with it at the pound to see if it has any serious issues.

Motionboy has the only greyhound that I've been around. That dog is super chill, but like Chuck said, not for biking and skiing.

Yep that's what got me interested in them. Then another friend just got one and similar temperament to MB's. "the world's fastest couch potato"
