There's a mountain lion out there watching me

I have come to the conclusion that out here, there is a Mt. Lion silently watching us fools on every 5th or 8th ride.

agree. saw 4 or 5 carcasses on our couple mile hike up Adam’s Canyon today.

It was a terrible winter in much of WY for mule deer, up to 90% fawn mortality in some SW units. 80% adult doe mortality. Similar in NE UT. Really depressing if you love critters

The Sublette antelope herd in Wyoming (one of the largest herds of pronghorns in the world) is believed to have sustained close to 75% mortality this winter. Crushing.

I honestly thought it was higher than 75% mortality with mule deer this winter from what I’ve heard.
but fwiw the area we were in that # of carcasses is fairly normal once the trails open up. it’s big cat territory - across the hwy from my house. We’ve watched lions from my house through the spotting scope [emoji33]

Awesome, and terrifying. I’ve only seen one in person and ride the line of wanting to see one up close again and never having that experience again.

You guys ain’t kidding. Need a platform bike rack next, holeee shit!!
So much more gear than skiing.
but no $1000-2000 pass every year… which means you can actually spend it on gear instead

Yes and no…for a quick ride I feel it’s super easy to grab the bike and a bottle and go. Skiing, so much shit to shlep, especially if you’re touring. It honestly burns me out by the end of ski season, the fickleness and all the gear. But, yes, bikes are a money pit! I just snowmobile in the winter to convince myself mountain biking is cheap as shit![emoji16]
Welcome to bikes!! So fun!!!

Yea it’s pretty insane, especially considering how well it climbs (not quick on the ascent but feels efficient). It’s a decent one bike quiver for the Teton area for sure.

Good point on the ski pass savings. I guess it just feels like more gear since I’m buying most of it all at once. I’ve accumulated ski gear over 35 years of skiing so just feels like less.
Hiking is less boring if you run the descents. RunDowns are fun.
Today was fun.

Both are pretty bad depending how deep you go down the rabbit hole. Having great shops with solid technicians for each - bike and ski - definitely helps reduce the gear burden if you can tolerate some downtime - then you get to outsource a lot of repair tools, bench space, and most importantly time spent fucking around debugging / tuning. Of course even if you outsource everything except for basic maintenance, you are still looking at a decent set of gear …
-shoes, gloves and eyewear every couple of seasons,
-pads and helmet every 4-5 years,
-shock pump, tire pump, ideally a tubeless inflator canister if you don’t already have an air compressor
-basic set of metric allen wrenches and torx if necessary
-chain lube, tire sealant, valve core removal tool, sealant injector, spare valve cores
-tire levers and a tube
-spare chain quick link and a chain breaker tool
-spare derailleur hanger, shift cable, and brake pads are really really nice to have too, can often be the difference between walking or riding home
That’s basically my minimum list for being able to ride and get home and not have downtime over really simple things. Welcome to the club! Oh yeah, don’t be afraid to take lessons or clinics at a bike park, even if you have very little interest in the gravity/Freeride aspect of the sport, it’s just like skiing in that some lessons and observations on form go a long way!

Whelp, I’ve got none of that ^ except helmet and gloves. [emoji23]
