    help with fleas please

Fucking fleas have suddenly infested our house. Why this would happen is myterious because my wife and I are both allergic to dogs and cats and in the ten years we have owned this home, there has never been a domestic animal inside. We have no carpet, no hvac ducts, and very little upholstered furniture. But in the last three days my wife had received dozens of bites on her left leg, arm, and neck. I don't have any bites but she is getting eaten alive every night. At the same time she started getting these bites, my asthma suddenlyt kicked into high gear. I am having my worst episode of asthma in decades. Not sure if that is related or not. Tomorrow we plan to fog the whole house, and then wash every piece of fabric we have.

Any other thoughts on how to get rid of fleas? We are going crazy. Please tell me we don't have plague.

I boiled my thermometer, and sure enough, this spot, which purported to be two thousand feet higher than the locality of the hotel, turned out to be nine thousand feet LOWER. Thus the fact was clearly demonstrated that, ABOVE A CERTAIN POINT, THE HIGHER A POINT SEEMS TO BE, THE LOWER IT ACTUALLY IS. Our ascent itself was a great achievement, but this contribution to science was an inconceivably greater matter.

I think the standard Hartz collar will fit K; but you're gonna need the large breed one.

typical dirty telemarker stuff. Just start showering and it should clear up in a day or two.

In other news: fack, that sucks dude and I have no practical advice other than stay the hell away from my house!

    Jesus Christ man, try google.

Clean the rugs, spray the spray, done deal.

But if you have no hosts (i.e. pets) you basically can't have fleas in the first place. Unless you have vermin.

    I suggest a shower.

    And some mousetraps.

I've read everything on the first two pages of google that come up.

Pretty sure the bug I found this morning was a flea, not a bedbug. We can not see much and have not successfully trapped any using pans of soapy water and floating candles. Definitely no vermin in or under the house either. I was just down in the crawl space. That is why this is so frustrating. We suspect whatever it is came home with us from some of the heavy travel we have both been doing recently.

And you have never met two more anal retentive clean freaks than us. We both shower before bed without fail and change sheets and matress pads weekly or less. We have no rugs or carpets in our house and never wear shoes indoors -- there is only clean hardwood. I feel kind of silly scrubbing the floors again that I just scrubbed last week but we are doing everything we can in a massive, multi-frontal attack.

Maybe I should have asked for vibes instead of advice.

My only thoughts are that the fleas are in your bed. Where did you travel recently? Where do you live? When I lived in VA, fleas were everywhere, but in CO, they seem very much less prevalent. Just wondering.

Japan, Seattle, Chicago. The Sheraton Towers in Chicago was one of the filthiest hotels I have ever stayed in. That is my number one suspect.

Well, why do you think they're fleas?

With no pets and no vermin fleas are very unlikely.

Are you getting bit at night? If so, bedbugs are much more likely than fleas, they're a rapidly spreading problem that can be dealt with despite the fact that it's a bit of a pain in the ass. If you want advice let me know.

Oh man that sucks. I just visited a flea infested home a couple days ago and I could actually feel the buggers jumping off my arms and hair.

Swore I could hear them saying, "weeeeeeeeeee..."

I went spastic outside my car in a desperate hope to shake them off before getting in.

Oh, and you can get flea powder from the store in the pet section. Just sprinkle on stuff, brush, and let it sit for an hour. Then vacuum.

Thanks all. She has been getting bit at night and during the day when working at her desk. We vacuum there all the time and store big plastic crates containing the jewelry she makes and sells under it. Luggage and bedbugs seem higly probable given how much we have both been travelling. I just vacuumed the bedroom very thoroughly and sprayed the top of the matress with the bedbug spray. After it dries will flip and spray the other side. But I peeked at the bottom of the matress and couldn't see anything. We flip it about once a month anyway so the mystery remains. She sometimes feels some jumping off her legs while brushing her teeth or working at her desk so still uncertain what it is.

I live in a house with two cats, who are both indoor. About 2 months ago I started noticing they had fleas. Neither had been outside at all. We have 6 stray cats living under my neighbors house, which is extremely close to mine. We are pretty sure the fleas were actually jumping from these stray cats into our window.

ANYWAY, about 2 months later and things are better. When it was really bad, my gf was getting bitten a ton. Lots of info about dealing with the cats, but you don't have that problem.

Regarding the house, here is what we did:
-On all carpets, bought 20 Mule Team Borax and layed it down and worked it in. I actually left it in places for over a month. Helped a lot in all carpeted areas. We did it on our couches, book shelves, even spots where we have hard wood flooring. This was a bit hard for us, because you need to keep the cats away from it, but you dont have that problem. Thus far, this has worked great. I would look into it. It may not be the best solution, but it worked for us. Leave it for awhile, vacuum it up.
    - Fleas bombs seem to work ok. They only kill live fleas, not larva. We did it once, after the borax had been down for a week. And we did more bombs that reccomended. I would say, use more. Are house isn't that big, and we used 6 bombs.
    - Vaccum vacuum vacuum. All furniture, sheets, beds, etc.
    - Washing your sheets a lot, at least throw them in the dryer everyday.
    - Bag everything. We put all of out clothes, towels, blankets, etc. in garbage bags. We left them in there for a few days and that washed everything we could. The stuff that couldn't be washed was placed in the dryer at least. Kill those fuckers.

Hope that helps. We are looking better, so hopefully things keep going well. If they come....fuck! Good luck
Seriously, this can’t turn into yet another ON3P thread....

I think the verdict has to be spiders. Tiny yellow spiders.

We mounted a multi-frontal attack on the whole house today. 13 hours worth. We washed all bed coverings from matress pads up. Sprayed the beds with bed bug spray. Vacuumed the whole house, and then set off the bombs. We even put one in the crawl space. That reminds me, I need to close the hatch before any critters get in there. -- ok, crawl space secure.

Had to stay out for a while but we also had tons of bedding to wash and dry. So off to the coin laundry with a car full of down pillows, matress pads, blankets, quilts, two down comforters, and my sleeping bag. While all that was drying we went and bought a Miele HEPA certified vacuum cleaner to replace the 20 year old Hoover upright that really was only good at spreading dust around the house. Went out for a big Mexican dinner and beer, stopped at Liquor Mart for more beer, came home and got to work.

After opening up the house and putting fans all around, we had to wait outside for a half hour to clear the air a bit. Then out came the Miele. Holy crap does that thing suck -- and I mean in a good way. Our hardwoods have never been so clean. Also, if you put a big cushion in a garbage bag, stick the hose on it, and close the bag around it, the Miele will suck all the air out in less than 5 seconds. We vacuumed all the furniture, luggage, and windowsills too (that was where we saw a good number of spider carcasses). Then mopped the floors and took a shower.

Now I am relaxing with a beer before we go out to the car to get the clean linens and make the bed. I hope to hell this works. Weight down another pound today but that may just be dehydration. I am under 190 after being 198 on Tuesday. Still wheezing hard but it is actually better than this morning. We might get one of those air purifiers too.

Thanks for all the comments. Will report on how it works.

yeah, fleas seem unlikely. For one, they're visible bugs. Two, if you ever catch one, you will have a hard time killing it, they cannot be "crushed" like most bugs.

Sounds like y'all have it taken care of, though.
