When I was re-doing my house years ago we were taking apart a room that had clearly been tacked on to the back of the house. Underneath the walls I found a layer of mid century fish-packing crate pieces. The wood crates had been taken apart and nailed up to the studs as an interior sheathing. People do some crazy shit when they're building shit on a budget!

There were several multi-layer floor sections as well, including formica tiles stuck down with asbestos glue. Hours of endless fun.

Did something similar last weekend. The family bike stable was getting out of control. Situation is now rectified:

About to start my own shed of doom. The spot I'm going to put it had about 12" of elevation change from the NE to SW corner. Put up some string lines, grabbed a shovel and leveled out the pad by hand and eye yesterday. When it looked good to the eye I grabbed a level and a 10' piece of 2x12 I had lying around:

Not perfect, but damn close and plenty good for a shed. Same results on multiple spots on both axes.

Noted. Next few weekends are full up with a vacation-turned-hurricane-recovery trip, and then takin' the nephew out camping for his first time the next. But perhaps come Oct I may have a weekend to spare for manual labor.

Umm. I know it's just a shed but there's more than a few things going on with your framing depending on how you'll be roofing that. I assume you're going with simple rafters from high to low wall? Biggest concern for me would be based on fact of whether or not the high wall is load bearing ( ie your rough openings) and possible snow loads.

commonlaw, you want to stiffen up the perimeter of the openings and provide a way for loads to be appropriately supported.

I don't know the structure's dimensions, but suggest you consider the following:

minimum 4x8 header above the main opening (above the clerestory windows may be ok with double plate if they're 16" or less)
double studs both sides of openings
double top plate to support roof joists

[ETA] look up Rob Thallon's "Graphic Guide to Framing" at your library

Started on this project today, McDonald s face lift in Soldotna. Lots and lots of block lines hiding in there.

I think I can beef it up despite what has been built so far. I did put in simple rafters tonight:

There really is no snow load to speak of (thanks Obama) and already put up doublers though you can't see them. The siding was purposefully that tall to accommodate them and the rafters. This thing just needs to keep rain out and not fall over. I'll certainly reinforce the outside studs and openings. Thanks for the advice guys. Keep it coming as I build if you can. AC, that visual was awesome.

They will do a complete remodel nationwide, spend billions on ads, or try to remake themselves into a 'McCafe', but all they gotta do is make better burgers.
