The answer is as simple as it's all about choosing the right tool for the right conditions.
Would you ski your 65 mm width GS race skis on a waist deep day? Or ski your 105 mm waist pow skis on boilerplate (at least by choice?)
And, in my opinion, you also become a better waterman if you learn to ride a variety of boards in a variety of conditions. Hence the word "quiver".
And sometimes it just comes down to feeling; it sometimes feels great to just go out and cruise on the log vs. slash up and attack the waves on a shortboard.
