    Angry Dog sprayed by skunk.

Traveling for work and just get a call from Mrs. Shoe. Apparently one of my dogs got sprayed by a skunk...then he came barrelling in the house through the doggie door sprinting all over the house, sliding all over the carpet, spreading the smell over the place, etc. etc.

Dog is out in the garage now while she head's out to get stuff to try and get the smell out.

Any tips for 1) getting it out of the dog, and 2) getting the stink out of the carpet, house, etc from him sprinting all over the place and rolling around on the carpets??

nothing. my dog has been sprayed 3 times. one time my sister had taken him and her dog to the park. my dog got sprayed. she put him in her car and brought him home. she had to get rid of her car. the smell would not come out--we sprayed it daily with de-skunking spray.

she had to get rid of the car? Shit.

c'mon...there's GOT to be something to get this skunk stank out of carpet. (aside from a brand new carpet).

One of my cousins had a skunk get in their bedroom and hose the room down.

    New furniture
    New walls
    New subfloor
    New carpet

    The room doesn't smell anymore.

Your best bet is probably the peroxide mix but…that'll probably change the color of your carpets.

Murphy's oil soap may help. The skunk scent is oil based, and Murphy's is an oil based soap. Dawn dishwashing detergent cuts oil as well.

This summarizes much of whats' already been said on here: http://www.aaanimalcontrol.com/skunksmellremovalrid.htm

This college chemistry prof seems to validate the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/liquid detergent combo: http://www.humboldt.edu/~wfw2/skunkspray.shtml

she lived with the car for another 6 months or so. the only thing you can do with carpet is spray that de-skunk stuff on it. but, it never totally goes away and the de-skunk spray eventually blends into the skunk smell and after a while you cant tell the difference and it all just stinks.

    good luck!

one time that my dog got sprayed, he had been attacked by another dog and had stitches and a cone on his head for two weeks. the minute i took the stitches out and cone off, i let him outside in the yard and he immediately got sprayed and proceeded to rub his body all around on the grass, opening up the cuts again. f-ing skunks!

I'd try using a steam cleaner on the affected areas. I know someone who would probably let you borrow one.

To get rid of the odor of skunk spray, it is necessary to change the thiols into compounds that have little or no odor. This can easily be done by oxidizing the thiols to sulfonic acids. Many oxidizing agents can effect this change. Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) are mild enough to be used on pets although it may change their hair color. For inanimate objects sodium hypochlorite solutions (liquid laundry bleach) are cheap and effective. The chemical reaction for this transformation follows. (Recipes for deodorizing spray.)

I got sprayed by a skunk from a few feet. My friend saw it as we were coming out of the woods drinking when we were young and I took the brunt of the spray. I just washed my clothes and tool a shower and the smell was gone. I would imagine just washing your carpet with a steamcleaner and wiping everything else down possible should work just fine. I think the old-wive's tale about the bath in tomato juice isn't needed and I don't even know if it would work.

I got sprayed really bad. I reeked. We went into a grocery store just for the fun of it and people were REALLY complaining. Just soap and water worked just fine.

We've had too much experience with this problem at our house. You get some funny looks in the grocery store, reeking of skunk and holding a dozens summer's eve products in one arm and your toddler in the other.

    - Do not use tomato juice. It does nothing to eliminate the skunk smell. What happens is that the skunk smell overpowers your nose to the point that you stop smelling it. Olfactory fatigue AKA the my farts don't smell syndrome. When this sets in, your nose will pick up on the next strongest smell which is the tomato juice. When the tomato juice smell fades away the skunk smell returns.

    - For your dog. The nature's miracle is pretty good stuff. Try multiple applications with this. Hydrogen Peroxide based recipes will also work.

    - For your house and carpets the best solution is time. Open all your windows and blast fans. Anything that you put on to neutralize the odor will change the color of the carpet.

On Mythbusters they tested tomato juice, beer, and the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/dishsoap solution. They declared hydrogen peroxide solution to be the clear winner.

I boiled my thermometer, and sure enough, this spot, which purported to be two thousand feet higher than the locality of the hotel, turned out to be nine thousand feet LOWER. Thus the fact was clearly demonstrated that, ABOVE A CERTAIN POINT, THE HIGHER A POINT SEEMS TO BE, THE LOWER IT ACTUALLY IS. Our ascent itself was a great achievement, but this contribution to science was an inconceivably greater matter.

Our first Dane got sprayed not once, not twice, but 3 times while doing my stint in Northern Utah. OMG, what a facking nightmare, smelly one at that.

I will talk with the other half and find out the product we ended up using on the dog, carpet, bedding and the rest. It worked great, but the smell took a bit to go away.

Don't get pulled over, they are going to think you have the icky sticky. Be prepared for a search if the cop smells it. Seriously.

Oh that's funny! He didn't run away from electric clippers?

The pic was from the long lost New Years in Tahoe roll. We were out skiing and Mrs Punani was babysitting Sponge and trying out her new camera. Here's a few more.

You don't remember that weekend? Maybe this can jog your memory
